On November 17, the film “Lion” will be removed from Amazon Prime Video’s catalog. It tells the remarkable true story of an Indian man, played by Dev Patel, who sets out to find his family.
If you’re in the mood for a genuine and touching movie, make sure to watch “Lion” before it leaves Prime Video. Released in theaters in 2017, this family drama presents the true story of Saroo, an Indian boy who was adopted by an Australian couple when he was just five years old.
Twenty-five years later, Saroo has fully embraced his Australian identity, yet he still thinks of his family back in India. With only a few fragmented memories and determined resolve, he begins to scour through satellite images on Google Earth, hoping to recognize his hometown.
An Unfamiliar True Story
Directed by newcomer Garth Davis, “Lion” is the quintessential feel-good movie, featuring a protagonist who embarks on a journey to discover his roots. The understated Dev Patel, who shined in “Slumdog Millionaire,” leads the cast.
Patel fought hard for the role and dedicated himself to embodying the character. He underwent an intense eight-month preparation period that included a strict diet, physical training to build muscle, mastering an Australian accent, and growing out his beard to closely resemble the real Saroo Brierley.
It’s impossible not to be moved by his story and the young actor Sunny Pawar, who plays the child version of Saroo. Pawar’s innocence, determination, radiant expression, and love for Jalebi, a traditional Indian sweet, will melt your heart.
Certain dialogues in “Lion” will also leave a lasting impression, such as a poignant scene between Saroo and his adoptive mother, played by Nicole Kidman. The film explores the significance of the family we choose versus the sometimes overwhelming need to discover our origins.
With an impressive audience rating of 4.4 out of 5 on AlloCiné, “Lion” has brought tears to millions of viewers worldwide. It remains Dev Patel’s highest-rated film and arguably one for which he deserved multiple awards…
Catch it on Prime before it departs the catalog on November 17!
