“Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning” starring Tom Cruise, who is more of a stuntman than ever, showcases itself in a new, even more spectacular trailer, along with the official movie poster. The release is set for May 21, 2025!
“The Final Reckoning” is gearing up to be one of the most anticipated blockbusters of 2025, and its release is just around the corner, much to the delight of eager fans!
Almost two years after the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 on July 12, 2023, which drew over 2.6 million viewers in France, the sequel is set to hit theaters on May 21, 2025.
Following a trailer released last November and new visuals during the Super Bowl, here comes another thrilling trailer along with the official poster!
“You must trust me… one last time,” declares Tom Cruise. The trailer strikes a balance between action, emotion, and also leverages powerful imagery from the franchise more broadly. It also shows scenes from one of the film’s impressive stunts involving a yellow airplane featured on the poster.
Still directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film had its shooting halted due to the writers’ strike, and its initial 2024 release was delayed to 2025.
What is Mission Impossible 8 About?
It remains the persistent mystery surrounding each installment. Who knew the nature of the threat Tom Cruise would face in Fallout before seeing the movie? Or that he would be up against an artificial intelligence in Dead Reckoning?
The same goes for its sequel, especially since these films are rewritten during the shooting process. But with one crucial difference: this film’s status as the second half of the story.
Attention, the following text contains spoilers about Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1
The viewer is not starting from scratch and, now that the matter of the key seems settled, the film will likely revolve around the quest for what it unlocks: the source code of the Entity, buried with the submarine transporting it.
The official synopsis reads: Our lives are the sum of our choices. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
The plot could thus be more focused, although the saga loves to take us around the world. And, here, into the past. The past of Ethan and Gabriel, which should come to light.
Where has Luther gone to hide from the Entity? Is the submarine in Alaska? What secrets does Ethan’s past hold? Will he sacrifice himself for his friends, the ultimate and logical step of his journey shaped like a cross? Is this the end of the saga?
Why a Two-Part Story?
Mission Impossible 7 and 8 were originally planned to be shot back-to-back, like the sequels of Back to the Future and The Matrix.
Although Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie had to revise their shooting plans due to Covid, the original ambition remains the same. This was confirmed by the title of episode 7, unveiled simultaneously with the first trailer: Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1.
Why are we fighting like this? Why try to squeeze all this into two hours? Let’s cut the story in the middle and make two films
“I knew I wanted to expand the cast and give more for each of these characters to do, so I was aware that the film would be bigger and longer than Fallout“, explained the director and co-writer to Collider.
“At one point, I thought ‘Why are we fighting like this? Why try to cram all this into two hours? Let’s cut [the story] in the middle and make two films.”
“That’s really the reason I was driven to make a film in two parts. It’s not just because the story was bigger but also because we wanted more emotion in it.”
Who Stars in Mission Impossible 8?
ATTENTION – The segment below contains spoilers about the plot of “Mission Impossible 7”. Please skip if you have not seen the movie.
A Mission Impossible without Tom Cruise is unthinkable, so the star returns as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time in nearly thirty years, with a new set of daring stunts in store.
Ving Rhames, who has appeared in all the episodes alongside him, is back as well. So are Simon Pegg, his reliable ally since his debut in episode 3, and Rebecca Ferguson, the rogue element who has been part of the team since Rogue Nation.
Since Ilsa died in the first part of Dead Reckoning, only a flashback could bring her back to life. And, without an official cast announcement, there remains great uncertainty about her presence as well as that of Pom Klementieff, whose killer character Paris seemed still alive at the end of the film released on July 12.
Returning characters include Esai Morales, continuing to torment Tom Cruise as the villain Gabriel. The duo of agents played by Shea Whigam and Greg Tarzan Davis should still be around, as well as Henry Czerny, aka the enigmatic Eugene Kittridge. And Ethan can once again count on Grace, played by Hayley Atwell.
We should not forget Alana Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kirby), who still has a role in the plot. Marie (Mariela Garriga), seen so far in flashbacks and whom we will see again to learn more about Ethan’s past. Or, surprisingly, William Donloe (Rolf Saxon).
Involved unwillingly in the CIA headquarters heist in the first film, thanks to a laxative mixed into his coffee, the character will return. In Alaska, where Kittridge will ask that he be transferred after this failure? The photo released by Christopher McQuarrie hinting at his return suggests as much.
Just like this picture, in the snow, of Lucy Tulugarjuk, one of the new faces in this installment. Along with Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham (who will be on an aircraft carrier where Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie filmed), Nick Offerman, and Holt McCallany, who will play the Secretary of Defense.
Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning hits theaters on May 21, 2025.
