Must-Watch TV Tonight: If You Love Clint Eastwood’s Grit, Don’t Miss This Don Siegel Masterpiece!

Every day, AlloCiné suggests a movie to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight: the true story of Frank Morris and his two accomplices who in 1962 made a supposedly impossible escape from Alcatraz prison. Featuring Clint Eastwood at his best!

Alcatraz. This name alone evokes the extreme severity of the American prison environment. Located in the San Francisco Bay, this infamous penitentiary, which closed in 1963, witnessed several escape attempts. Throughout its 29 years of operation from 1934 to 1963, 36 inmates tried to break free in 14 different attempts. Out of these 36 escapees, 23 were recaptured, six were shot dead, and three vanished into the sea and were never found, presumed drowned.

Officially, no prisoner has ever successfully escaped from Alcatraz and reached the mainland. Frank Morris, along with two other inmates who escaped with him, were never found. They were considered missing and presumed drowned.

This incredible yet true story is the focus of Don Siegel’s classic 1970s film: Escape from Alcatraz. The film marks the fifth and final collaboration between the veteran Hollywood filmmaker and Clint Eastwood.

The former Dirty Harry is supported by a strong cast, starting with Patrick McGoohan, who plays the warden of the prison. Additionally, a young actor making his film debut, who would later rise to fame with Silverado, also stars. This actor is none other than Danny Glover, who portrays an inmate in Siegel’s film.

Despite its frequent reruns on television, Escape from Alcatraz never wears out its welcome. In the sub-genre of prison films, it remains firmly unshakable from its pedestal, and that is unlikely to change anytime soon!
