Every day, AlloCiné suggests a movie to watch on TV. Tonight: Clint Eastwood in a wild chase!
Are you a fan of Clint Eastwood and action movies? Then clear your Sunday evening schedule and treat yourself to “The Gauntlet,” directed and starred by the iconic American actor, who finds himself in a manic pursuit with criminals and cops hot on his heels. This flawless action thriller moves at such a breakneck pace that once you’re settled in, you won’t leave your couch!
Released in 1978, “The Gauntlet,” which might soon see a remake starring Tom Cruise, follows policeman Ben Shockley (Eastwood), tasked with transporting a suspect from Las Vegas to Phoenix. He discovers that his suspect is a woman (Sondra Locke) who is desperately targeted for elimination.
“The Gauntlet,” which drew almost 600,000 viewers in French theaters, is Clint Eastwood’s sixth directorial effort (he has long declined certain honors), taking the reins of the project after names like Sam Peckinpah and Walter Hill were briefly considered. The film, which can be seen as a kind of anti-Dirty Harry (the main character is a failed, alcoholic cop), showcases the legendary actor alongside Sondra Locke, his partner at the time, with whom he would ultimately make six films.
Total Action Against a Jazzy Backdrop
An action film of formidable effectiveness, set to the jazzy score by Jerry Fielding (nominated for an Oscar for “The Outlaw Josey Wales”), “The Gauntlet” may not be the most famous of Clint Eastwood’s films but it certainly deserves your attention. Ready to settle in and enjoy a crazy chase across American roads?
