It’s one of the most anticipated series of the season and certainly one that will be the talk of the town. Today, Netflix releases season 3 of its anthology series focused on America’s most notorious criminals.
In 2022, Netflix captivated audiences worldwide with “Monster – Dahmer,” the first installment of an anthology created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. While the series, starring the exceptional Evan Peters, is of high quality in many respects, the portrayal of the serial killer—and the viewers’ obsession with him—sparked prolonged discussions. In terms of viewership, it shattered records by amassing 115 million views.
Season 2, which focused on the Menendez brothers and aired last year, was even more polarizing among subscribers. With its provocative take on the two criminals accused of murdering their parents and its bold liberties, the “Monster” series took another step into unabashed horror.
But it’s the third installment of the anthology, featuring perhaps one of the worst serial killers in American history, that might just push the envelope too far. In season 3, with Charlie Hunnam in a leading role, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan delve into the psyche of psychopath Ed Gein.
What is Season 3 of Monster About?
Serial killer. Grave robber. Psychopath. In the icy fields of 1950s Wisconsin countryside, a friendly and unassuming recluse named Eddie Gein lives quietly on a dilapidated farm, which houses a true chamber of horrors so macabre it would redefine the American nightmare. Driven by isolation, psychosis, and a consuming obsession with his mother, Gein and his perverse crimes spawned a new kind of monster, destined to haunt Hollywood for decades.
From “Psycho” to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” to “The Silence of the Lambs,” Gein’s sinister legacy has inspired the creation of numerous fictional monsters and sparked a cultural fascination with deviant criminals. Ed Gein not only influenced a genre, he became the prototype for modern horror.
What You Need to Know
Ryan Murphy has warned: this third season of Monster will be even more brutal than the previous ones. Taking horror a step further, this season features a man who turns his victims into lampshades. In other words, if you were shocked by Dahmer, the story of Ed Gein might not sit well with you.
The Netflix series will not only recount the crimes and misdeeds of Ed Gein but also explore the impact of this criminal on today’s world and pop culture. That’s why the writers have decided to introduce the character of Alfred Hitchcock (played by Tom Hollander), who was inspired by books on the subject, leading to his famous film “Psycho.”
On paper, this third season of Monster about Ed Gein seems promising. While there’s no doubting the series’ quality – particularly Charlie Hunnam’s performance – it remains to be seen how far the writers will go in portraying his crimes and traumas.
