Crowned Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for “Babygirl,” Nicole Kidman has set an impressive record in the film industry.
Is there any height Nicole Kidman can’t reach? The star, who won an Oscar in 2003 for her role in The Hours, continues to astonish the world. On Saturday, September 7th, she was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in Babygirl.
Directed by Halina Reijn, this erotic thriller captivated both audiences and critics, who described Kidman’s performance as “sensational.”
With this latest accolade, Kidman sets a benchmark few actresses have achieved before: winning awards at the three major world film festivals—Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. Until now, only Julianne Moore and Juliette Binoche had accomplished this feat.
Following her Silver Bear win for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours in 2003, the Australian actress received a special award at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Although it wasn’t a traditional acting award, it was nevertheless a significant honor for that milestone edition.
Nicole Kidman Struck by Personal Tragedy
Nicole Kidman’s absence at the festival’s closing ceremony caught significant attention. Having already arrived to accept her award, she learned of her mother’s death and had to leave urgently. Halina Reijn, the director of Babygirl, read Kidman’s letter on stage:
“Today, I arrived in Venice before learning that my mother, the brave and beautiful Janelle Anne Kidman, had passed away. I am in shock and must return to my family. But this award is for her.
She shaped me, guided me, and built me. I am more than grateful to be able to say her name through Halina. The intersection of life and art can be heartbreaking. My heart is broken.”
Isabelle Huppert, the president of the jury, also had words of praise for the star at the press conference, commending her awarded performance.
Nicole Kidman is currently featured in the Netflix series A Perfect Couple, which is ranked number one on the platform.
In France, “Babygirl” does not yet have a release date.
