Tonight, TF1 airs “Love Actually,” a Christmas movie classic, but if you pause at just the right moment, you might catch a fun little detail that probably slipped by you before.
“Love Actually” is one of the most beloved Christmas films among audiences. With a rating of 3.8 out of 5 on AlloCiné, it remains a timeless classic of the season. Despite the passage of time and some recent criticisms, it continues to be highly cherished by viewers.
A Counterfeit Barbie?
Directed by Richard Curtis (known for “Four Weddings and a Funeral”), this romantic comedy designed for the holiday season boasts an ensemble cast including Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy, Laura Linney, Colin Firth, Martine McCutcheon, Liam Neeson, Joanna Page, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Andrew Lincoln, Martin Freeman, and Keira Knightley. This film not only brings a touch of Christmas magic that wraps its multiple plots into a delightful package but also contains a small detail that even the most avid fans might have missed because it appears on screen very briefly.
At 45 Minutes and 47 Seconds
The scene unfolds between Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (Alan Rickman). Harry is seated, holding sets of children’s paint kits, while Karen hangs up the phone after talking to her brother, the Prime Minister played by Hugh Grant. They start discussing the singer Joni Mitchell, whom Harry dislikes, while Karen plays her music in the background as she wraps Christmas gifts.
Karen then picks up two dolls she intends to give as gifts, heavily inspired by the Mattel brand. She describes one as “S&M” and the other as “drag queen.” The first doll is dressed in leather and chains, while the second is adorned with a pink skirt suit and a feather boa draped over its shoulders, sporting an exaggeratedly high hairstyle. And if they are indeed Mattel dolls, it turns out the one in her left hand is actually a disguised Ken, not a Barbie!
This clever trick was a creative twist added by the film’s prop team, who clearly had fun devising these dolls that are definitely not part of the official Barbie line!
