“Congress Must Act, Uphold the Constitution, and Impeach Donald Trump for His Serious Power Abuses,” States Campaign Director of Free Speech for People
Recent polls indicate that a majority of American voters are in favor of Congress initiating a third impeachment against President Donald Trump. This would be unprecedented, as Trump has already been impeached twice during his first term by the House of Representatives but was acquitted by the Senate both times.
According to a polling memo released by ASO Communications and Research Collaborative on Friday, within just a few months of Trump’s latest presidency, 52% of likely voters from various political alignments somewhat or strongly support his impeachment. This includes 84% of Democrats, 55% of Independents, and 20% of Republicans.
The poll, conducted by Data for Progress from April 18-21, questioned 1,171 participants, asking, “With an impeachment effort led by Democrats in Congress, which statement aligns closest to your view, even if none are perfect?”
The majority of respondents (46%), including 80% of Democrats, 52% of Independents, and 9% of Republicans, believe that “Democrats in Congress should try to impeach Trump as they are obligated to remove a president who has infringed upon Americans’ constitutional rights and broken the law.”
Meanwhile, 38% think Democrats should not impeach Trump as he has not committed any impeachable offenses, and 17% suggest avoiding impeachment as it would likely fail and may portray the Democratic Party as weak.
The memo from Friday emphasizes that “support for impeachment aligns with levels observed during the two previous impeachment proceedings—before a full public case has even been made. This presents a chance to form a compelling argument for the American populace and show that elected officials are dedicated to fulfilling their oaths and are prepared to take decisive actions to safeguard our liberties, our families, and our future.”
In light of the polling results, Alexandra Flores-Quilty, the campaign director for Free Speech for People, remarked, “Americans nationwide are determined not to let Trump and his allies undermine our democracy.”
Leading a bipartisan ‘Impeach Trump Again’ campaign, Free Speech for People has garnered over 370,000 signatures on a petition. Their constitutional attorneys have chronicled various power abuses by Trump and his affluent supporters since his inauguration. These include illegal measures against immigrants, punitive actions against perceived foes, assaults on voting rights, and securing the dismissal of criminal charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Flores-Quilty stated, “Congress has the responsibility to act, protect the Constitution, and impeach and remove Donald Trump from office due to his severe abuses of power.”
Despite the GOP’s slim control over both chambers of Congress, U.S. Representative Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), who is facing two primary challengers for the 2026 cycle, introduced seven articles of impeachment against Trump on Monday. Additional impeachment articles could soon follow from Representative Al Green (D-Texas). At an anti-Trump rally in early April, reported by The Hill, Green announced, “We need a Senate that will convict him this time, and I want you to know, from my heart, from my heart, I understand that he is a Goliath. He is a Goliath. He has control of the generals in the military. He has control of the Justice Department. He has control of the Republican Party, but my friends, my friends, for every Goliath, there is a David.”
“And I want you to know, Mr. President, this David is going to bring articles of impeachment against you within the next 30 days,” Green declared to the crowd in Washington, D.C. “Within the next 30 days, I’m bringing articles of impeachment. I’m coming for you. Mr. President, this David is coming for you.”
Other recent surveys also indicate that voters are concerned or displeased with the president. For instance, a New York Times/Siena College poll conducted from April 21-24 shows that 66% of voters describe his second term as “chaotic,” 59% think it’s “scary,” 54% disapprove of his job performance, and 53% believe that the United States is “headed in the wrong direction.”
An ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted April 18-22 similarly found that 55% of Americans disapprove of the president’s job performance. A majority of voters also stated that Trump is “going too far” in attempts to expand the power of the presidency, shutting down federal agencies, laying off government workers, targeting political rivals, and terminating efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in workplaces.
