Nonprofit Spearheads Campaign to Impeach Donald Trump Again
The advocacy group Free Speech for People has initiated a bipartisan movement titled “Impeach Trump Again” to promote the ousting of U.S. President Donald Trump. Launched recently, the campaign has quickly amassed over 100,000 signatures on its petition, indicating strong public backing for impeachment proceedings.
This initiative urges Congress to begin an impeachment investigation against Trump. The substantial number of signatures reflects a broad-based desire for such an inquiry.
Alexandra Flores-Quilty, the campaign director at Free Speech for People, emphasized the urgency of the situation in her statement on Thursday. “The overwhelming support for impeachment underscores the American public’s refusal to tolerate a ‘King Trump’ scenario. We are calling on Congress to demonstrate courage and hold Trump accountable by launching an impeachment inquiry,” she stated.
The petition, which debuted on the day of Trump’s inauguration, advocates for Congress to investigate Trump on several grounds. These include potential breaches of the U.S. Constitution’s emoluments clauses, his decision to pardon participants in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot, and engaging in what the campaign describes as “unlawful” and “corrupt” electoral tactics.
It’s not the first time Free Speech for People has sought to mobilize public opinion against Trump; the organization initiated a similar campaign on the day of his inauguration in 2017.
According to the advocacy group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the emoluments clauses mandate that Trump must completely divest from any enterprises that profit from dealings with the federal government or state governments. Despite public scrutiny, Trump’s sprawling business interests, which now include a social media platform and a cryptocurrency token, appear to remain intact.
The campaign also highlights other actions by Trump that it considers impeachable offenses.
Throughout his first term, Trump faced impeachment by the House of Representatives twice, although he was acquitted by the Senate on both occasions. Currently, both the Senate and the House of Representatives are under the control of the Republican Party, to which Trump is affiliated.
