Sherlock Holmes 3: Jude Law shares updates (reassuring?) on the sequel with Robert Downey Jr.

It’s been over a decade since the release of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as the iconic detective duo. The third installment has faced countless delays and changes, leaving its future uncertain. However, in a recent interview, Jude Law offered a glimmer of hope for those yearning to see Holmes and Watson back on the big screen.

A Long-Delayed Mystery: The Status of Sherlock Holmes 3

The idea of a third Sherlock Holmes film has been floating around since 2011, when A Game of Shadows ended on a tantalizing cliffhanger. Despite initial enthusiasm, the project hit repeated roadblocks, starting with Robert Downey Jr.’s packed schedule following his rise as Iron Man. In 2019, the original director, Guy Ritchie, stepped away, with Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) stepping in to take the helm. Then came the pandemic, which forced the project into further delays.

By 2021, news about the sequel had dwindled to a whisper. Rumors of spin-off series planned for Max emerged in 2022, but these, too, seemed to vanish without a trace. For fans, it felt as though the case of Sherlock Holmes 3 might remain unsolved.

Jude Law on the Excitement (and Challenges) of Returning

In a recent interview with The Playlist while promoting his new film The Order, Jude Law addressed the status of Sherlock Holmes 3. While he didn’t reveal specific details, his remarks suggest that the project is still alive, albeit in a state of flux.

“The project has evolved so much over the years—nearly ten, to be precise,” Law said. “There’s a lot of excitement about the film. What’s been truly amazing for me is the friendship I’ve developed with Robert [Downey Jr.] and his wife, Susan. They’re very important to me. I hope we can see this through to the end. I hear there’s a new version of the script, but I haven’t had the chance to read it yet. Of course, the big questions remain: ‘How much will it cost? And can we actually pull it off?’” he added with a laugh.

Law’s comments strike a balance between cautious optimism and realism. While the enthusiasm to reunite with Downey Jr. is evident, the practical challenges of bringing such a large-scale production to life are significant.

What Lies Ahead for Jude Law (and Sherlock Holmes 3)

As fans hold their breath for concrete news on the sequel, Jude Law has no shortage of projects keeping him busy. He will soon appear in Skeleton Crew, a new Star Wars series set to premiere on Disney+ on December 4. When asked about future Star Wars projects, Law playfully left the door open, saying, “I don’t know—it’s up to them [the studios].”

Law is also set to star in two upcoming films: Eden, directed by Ron Howard, and The Order, helmed by Justin Kurzel. While release dates for both movies remain under wraps, they promise to showcase Law’s versatility as an actor.

A Case Worth Solving

The path to Sherlock Holmes 3 has been anything but straightforward. Yet, with a fresh script reportedly in development and both Law and Downey Jr. expressing their desire to return, there’s reason to hope that the game isn’t over just yet. Fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective will need to keep their magnifying glasses handy as they await further clues about the long-awaited sequel.
