Tom Holland shares how Robert Downey Jr. literally saved his first scene as Spider-Man – an act that speaks volumes about the Iron Man star and marked the beginning of Holland’s journey in the MCU.
During his debut as Peter Parker in the Marvel Universe, Tom Holland received unexpected but essential support from Robert Downey Jr. The actor, famed for his portrayal of Tony Stark, essentially rescued Holland’s inaugural scene on set.
Last year, Holland, who has been portraying Spider-Man in the MCU for nine years, shared this memory on the “Rich Roll” podcast. He discussed the significant help Downey provided during his very first shoot. “Where did the kid’s lines go?” Downey had inquired, upon discovering that the scene had been significantly shortened from Holland’s audition.
For the audition, Tom Holland prepared an extensive eight-page dialogue scene, while the norm is typically about two pages. His audition was a success, and he quickly joined the Avengers team. However, on the set of Captain America: Civil War, he noticed that the initial scene, where Tony Stark recruits Peter Parker, had been cut down to “about a page and a half, maybe two pages.”
Robert to the Rescue
Confronted with this, Robert Downey Jr. did not hesitate to step in. The directors explained that with an already lengthy 140-page script, it was impossible to keep the entire scene. Nevertheless, the veteran actor insisted.
“We start shooting the scene and Downey balks: ‘Where did the kid’s lines go?’ And the Russos respond: ‘You know, it’s a script that’s already 140 pages, we can’t spend too much time on this.’ And he replied: ‘No, no, no, you’re going to want to spend time on this. Let’s shoot the whole scene as it was in the audition. You can always cut from it, but you’ll want the whole thing.’ And they kept it all. That’s something I owe him.”
Thanks to Downey’s intervention, the original scene was preserved, a gesture Holland has never forgotten and for which he remains extremely grateful.
Today, Tom Holland hopes to pay it forward by helping a young actor find their footing on set, just as Robert Downey Jr. did for him. With the preparation of Spider-Man 4, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he is eager to support the next generation.
Despite these behind-the-scenes anecdotes, Spider-Man remains one of the MCU’s most popular figures. Holland’s three solo films have garnered nearly $3.9 billion worldwide, not to mention his role in the Avengers. His popularity continues to be a major asset for Marvel Studios and Sony, ensuring box office success.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), is set to hit theaters on July 29, 2026. In the meantime, the rest of the saga, as well as other Marvel films, are available for streaming on Disney+.
