Shocking: Nearly 500 Dead in Lebanon – US Urged to Implement Israel Arms Embargo Now!

The ongoing devastation in Lebanon has led to urgent demands on Monday for the United States to cease its arms supply to Israel. This is a call that has echoed globally for almost a year as Israel has been responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

“The necessity for an immediate arms embargo on the hardline Israeli government is critical. This is to prevent American weapons, funded by our taxpayers, from being utilized in the recent massacre in Lebanon or in the continuous genocide in Gaza, which seems to now include an ‘extermination zone’ where all living entities will face destruction,” stated Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the national deputy director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Mitchell referred to a report by CNN on Sunday stating that “Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is contemplating a strategy to drive all Palestinian civilians out of northern Gaza, inclusive of Gaza City, with the aim of besieging Hamas and securing the release of hostages.”

Israel, which is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice, has been responsible for the deaths of at least 41,455 Palestinians in Gaza and has injured another 95,878 in a retaliation that has lasted almost a year following the Hamas-led attack on October 7. The majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants have been displaced and are struggling to obtain food, water, shelter, and medical assistance.

“Reviving the reputation of President Biden… depends on his readiness to take decisive action towards peace, particularly considering the recent escalations in Lebanon that risk plunging millions more civilians across the region into a crisis.”

During the onslaught on Gaza, Israel has been trading blows with Hezbollah, the Lebanese political party and paramilitary group. In recent times, Israel has heightened fears of a regional war by detonating thousands of electronic devices all over Lebanon and through a bombing campaign that has resulted in at least 492 deaths and 1,645 injuries.

As reported by Jeremy Scahill and Murtaza Hussain for Drop Site News on Monday, residents in southern Lebanon have been warned to evacuate their homes through text messages, automated phone calls, and social media.

“People have seen what’s occurred in Gaza and they are aware that the Israelis have the capacity and they understand that essentially the West has abandoned any pretense of intervening,” stated Karim Makdisi, a professor of international politics at the American University in Beirut. “There’s no reason to believe that the Israelis will not proceed and essentially aim to evacuate a large portion of the south and attempt to render the entire area completely uninhabitable for the foreseeable future.”

Makdisi also suggested that Israel would not have launched an attack on Lebanon of this magnitude without a “green light” from the Biden administration, adding, “I believe they’ve been given a sort of clear understanding that they have until the elections to do as they please.”

Democratic U.S. President Joe Biden stepped down from this year’s race and passed the baton to Vice President Kamala Harris in July, following his unsatisfactory debate performance against the Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump. Harris continues to disappoint critics of the Israeli assault on Gaza with what the Uncommitted National Movement described as her “reluctance to adjust the unconditional weapons policy or to even clearly express campaign support for upholding existing U.S. and international human rights law.”

However, regardless of the outcome of the November election, Biden will continue to occupy the Oval Office until early next year. Therefore, calls from anti-war advocates continue to pressure him to halt the supply of weapons to Israel and to do more to establish a long-term cease-fire in the region. The president is scheduled to address United Nations members on Tuesday.

“In his address to the U.N. General Assembly tomorrow, the primary thing we need to hear from President Biden is his strategy to leverage his authority to put an end to Israel’s atrocities in Gaza and ensure its adherence to international law in both Gaza and the West Bank,” stated Abby Maxman, president and CEO of Oxfam America, on Monday. “To achieve this, he must commit to finally ending lethal arms sales to Israel and exert the necessary influence to halt a spiraling conflict with severe humanitarian consequences.”

“Reviving the credibility of President Biden—and the United States—on the world stage hinges on his readiness to take decisive action towards peace, especially in view of the latest escalations in Lebanon that risk plunging millions more civilians across the region into a crisis,” Maxman argued, underscoring that the U.S. is in “a unique position” to influence Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The American President “must leverage his influence to secure a complete and permanent cease-fire, the safe return of all Israeli hostages and unlawfully detained Palestinians, full access for humanitarian aid, and accountability for war crimes committed,” she argued. “As long as President Biden continues to overlook Israel’s blatant violations of international law and provide the means for Israel’s unrestrained bombardment in Gaza, his legacy and the U.S. credibility will be utterly squandered.”
