Squid Game Creator Reveals Major Changes in Seasons 2 and 3!

A notable shift occurred in seasons 2 and 3 of “Squid Game” aimed at broadening the series’ audience on Netflix.

It might have gone unnoticed by many, but upon reflection, it’s quite apparent. Airing three years after the first season, the second season of Squid Game introduced almost an entirely new cast. There were 456 new players… well, actually 454, as Gi-hun Seong (No. 456) and game master Hwang In-ho (No. 001) had already made appearances in the first season.

Younger Characters to Appeal to Millennials

Unlike the first season, the average age of the participants in this new edition of Squid Game is significantly younger. Many of the players are in their twenties, a deliberate choice by the series creator Hwang Dong-hyeok.

“In season 2, I expanded the age range to include players in their twenties,” he stated at a press conference (reported by Télé-Loisirs. “We now have more players from the so-called millennial generation, creating more characters that viewers can directly relate to. However, it’s more essential to focus on the values and traits of the characters rather than their age.”

Yet, the South Korean writer and director hopes that Squid Game fans won’t just relate to the characters based on their age. Citing Thanos, the most eccentric character of season 2, Hwang Dong-hyeok explains that it’s the personality and appearance of the character that explain his popularity, not his young age.

Squid Game’s Hero Resonates Across Generational Lines

If there’s one character who appeals to fans of all ages, it’s Gi-hun Seong. The protagonist, played by Lee Jung-jae (52 years old), is universally beloved for his values (defending the oppressed, fighting for justice) and his refusal to give up despite the countless challenges he faces.

He has a lot on his plate in the last six episodes of the series, which mark the final stretch in his quest for revenge against the game master. The third and final season of Squid Game will premiere this Friday, June 27, exclusively on Netflix.
