As “The Social Network” celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, a sequel has been announced that may feature three of Hollywood’s hottest actors.
Released in 2010, David Fincher’s film “The Social Network,” which chronicled the origins of Facebook, became a cultural milestone. It was a surprising revelation when Aaron Sorkin, the original screenwriter, announced he was preparing a sequel and would also direct it.
While the full cast has not yet been revealed, rumors are already swirling about some key roles. Jeremy Strong (known from “Succession” and “The Apprentice”) is reportedly in talks to take over Jesse Eisenberg’s role as Mark Zuckerberg, according to Variety.
And that’s not all! Two more actors whose careers have skyrocketed recently may also join “The Social Network 2”: Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White. Madison gained widespread acclaim in 2024 for her role as a stripper in “Anora,” which earned her the Best Actress Oscar, while White has won three Golden Globes and two Emmy Awards for his role as a chef in the critically acclaimed series “The Bear.”
From a Journalistic Perspective
Based on “The Facebook Files,” a series of articles by Jeff Horowitz published in the Wall Street Journal in 2021, which exposed the inner workings of Mark Zuckerberg’s company, “The Social Network 2” is said to draw inspiration from investigative films like Michael Mann’s “The Insider,” which dealt with a whistleblower in the tobacco industry, and “Spotlight,” the Best Picture Oscar winner of 2016 that detailed the investigation by journalists into a pedophilia scandal within the Catholic Church, as per sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter.
The development of “The Social Network 2” is progressing swiftly, and it appears to be a priority for Sony, though no formal offers have been made to the actors yet. However, it is known that production has already started meeting potential cast members.
Mikey Madison is being considered for the role of Frances Haugen, the data engineer turned whistleblower who provided damning information about Facebook to the U.S. federal regulatory agency overseeing financial markets and to the Wall Street Journal. Meanwhile, the actor set to portray Bruce Springsteen in an anticipated biopic this October might take on the role of the former technology journalist from the prestigious newspaper who leaked this information.
