On July 9, 2025, Superman is set to make a grand return to the silver screen, featuring a new actor, director, costume, and universe. Here’s everything you need to know about this highly anticipated film.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman! The iconic character has once again undergone a transformation in cinema, following portrayals by actors such as Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill—or even Nicolas Cage, if you count his cameo in The Flash.
Under the direction of James Gunn, who will also steer the new version of the DC Universe alongside producer Peter Safran, the Man of Steel is slated for a comeback with a highly anticipated new movie on July 9, 2025. Here’s what we know so far.
Release Date: When and Where Can You Watch the New Superman?
The film is set to premiere on July 9, 2025, in French theaters. Although several projects were delayed due to the actors and writers’ strike in 2023, the film originally titled Superman: Legacy was not significantly affected. The pre-production phase wasn’t impacted enough to postpone filming and its release, as James Gunn announced promptly after the strike ended.
However, there was a significant change unrelated to the aforementioned disruptions: the film’s title has been simplified to Superman, as the director revealed on Instagram on February 29, 2024, coinciding with the start of filming and the hero’s birthday—sometimes, life aligns perfectly.
As with previous films like Man of Steel or Superman Returns, this movie targets the summer season for its launch. Perhaps to take advantage of the sun’s benefits on Clark Kent, who derives his powers from its rays? Or simply because one of the most iconic superheroes of all time deserves the most prominent season to maximize his impact.
Especially since this film is intended to spearhead the future DC Universe, and its success will determine the fate of the shared universe that will unfold on both the big and small screens.
Casting: Who Is the New Superman?
In a move that has become almost traditional, like his predecessors, James Gunn has chosen a relatively unknown actor to don the cape and play the role, ensuring the character’s aura isn’t overshadowed by the actor’s. David Corenswet, previously seen in The Politician and Hollywood by Ryan Murphy, and in the film Pearl, has been cast as the new Superman.
Last summer, the American actor triumphed over Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult for the role. However, Hoult, similar to Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins—who became the Scarecrow after auditioning for Bruce Wayne—will portray Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor.
The beloved Lois Lane will be played by Emmy Award-winner Rachel Brosnahan, known from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, who reportedly outperformed Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor for the role. It remains to be seen if the journalist will display any stand-up comedy talents as she does in the Prime Video series, but her casting has been well received.
Speaking of comedy, Lois Lane will be supported by Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo, known from Vacation and not new to superhero films, having played Gwen Stacy’s brother (Emma Stone) in The Amazing Spider-Man.
The reporter will be essential in supporting the heroes against the already announced villains: Lex Luthor and his accomplice Eve Tessmacher (Sara Sampaio), as well as The Engineer (Maria Gabriela de Faria), who can change appearance thanks to nanites replacing her blood. Not to mention the businessman with mental powers, Maxwell Lord, played by Sean Gunn, James’s brother.
Given the film contains “super” in its title, it will indeed showcase other characters with superpowers: Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), also capable of flying; Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), an expert martial artist; Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), who can transform; and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), one of the Green Lanterns from the comic books.
And let’s not forget Superman’s cousin: Supergirl will make her debut in the DC Universe with this film, portrayed by Milly Alcock, known from season 1 of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spin-off/prequel.
The Story: What Is Superman About?
Does a reboot necessarily have to be an origin story? No. And like The Batman with the Caped Crusader, Superman won’t exactly reset everything. While it might mention his origins, the story is not expected to start on Krypton, and Jor-El and Lara-El would only appear as holograms.
Unlike his adoptive parents, we will follow Clark Kent during his early years as a superhero, as he tries to balance his human life with his alien origins and superpowers, while contemplating his role in the world he inhabits, thanks to a script written by James Gunn himself.
Judging by the typography used to confirm the release date, and from images released so far, this Superman will be more colorful and optimistic than Zack Snyder’s version. It also serves as the foundational piece of the upcoming DC Universe, with the inclusion of characters like Hawkgirl and Green Lantern, and later Supergirl in her own film, teasing a world that extends beyond the borders of Metropolis.
On July 9, 2025, be sure to look up at the sky and the screen, because there might be some easter eggs hidden in this Superman.
