“The Rookie: The LAPD Cop” concluded its thrilling eighth season with a major cliffhanger following the unexpected death of Monica Stevens, portrayed by Bridget Regan. But did you know the series was almost concluded there without a ninth season, featuring a finale entirely different from what was shown on screen?

The Rookie: The Creator Considered a Different Ending for Season 8

Recall in the last episode, Tim Bradford (played by Eric Winter) proposes to Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) right before they are abducted by Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), a notorious criminal with a vendetta against Tim. This ending left fans on the edge of their seats, especially since they’ll have to wait to see what happens to the newly dubbed Chenford couple!

Interestingly, Alexi Hawley, the showrunner, had filmed an alternate ending in case the series was abruptly canceled, as actor Eric Winter revealed to “People” magazine. At the time of filming Season 8, it was uncertain whether “The Rookie” would return for a ninth season, prompting the need to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

“We even shot an alternate series finale,” Winter mentioned, adding that it “would have been different.” Though he didn’t divulge specifics about this alternate ending, one might imagine that in a better scenario, Chenford could have ended up married after their beachside engagement, without the drama of being kidnapped.

What to Expect in Season 9?

After some uncertainty, “The Rookie” was thankfully renewed for a ninth season in April, a mere fifteen weeks after Season 8 began airing. This was a relief for the team and fans alike, who can now look forward to a new spin-off series from the original. So, what can we expect in this upcoming season full of twists and turns?

According to “TVLine,” here’s what’s in store: “John Nolan (played by Nathan Fillion), once the oldest rookie at the LAPD, now relies on his life experiences, determination, and sense of humor to keep up with recruits who are over twenty years his junior.” Continuing, “John and his team have to navigate the intense and unpredictable nature of their jobs while dealing with their personal challenges and mentoring the next generation of first responders.” This vague description keeps fans guessing about what will happen next to Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen. Stay tuned for more.
