Tonight on Amazon: Matthew McConaughey Shines in Powerful True Family Drama!

Yann Demange made a striking debut in 2014 with his first feature film, an impressive display of control and suspense set against the backdrop of the Irish Troubles and the civil war between the IRA and the British government: ’71.

The film follows the story of a British soldier accidentally left behind by his unit during the tumultuous period known as “The Troubles” on the streets of Belfast, Ireland. For his work on ’71, Yann Demange earned two BAFTA Award nominations and won the British Independent Film Award for Best Director.

With such a notable background, anticipation was high for his second film: Undercover – A True Story. The plot centers around Richard Wershe, a man of humble beginnings, and his son, Rick Jr., nicknamed “White Boy Rick”, a teenager who initially served as an informant for the FBI before he himself turned to drug trafficking, and who, after being abandoned by those who used him, was sentenced to spend his life in prison.

The film features an always impeccable Matthew McConaughey as the father, but even more so, a remarkable Richie Merritt – who is not a professional actor – playing his son. Set in Detroit during the 1980s at the peak of the crack epidemic, as the city was devastated by poverty and violence, Undercover is a powerful and poignant family drama before it is a criminal story, packing the punch of an uppercut.
