United States President Donald Trump intensified his assault on Springfield, Ohio’s Haitian immigrant community on Friday, pledging to initiate his extensive deportation plan in the region if he wins the presidency.
“We will undertake major deportations from Springfield, Ohio, major deportations,” Trump declared to journalists at his golf resort near Los Angeles, California. “We’re going to remove these individuals. We’re transporting them back to Venezuela.”
Trump’s statement is noteworthy considering the reality that the majority of immigrants in Springfield hail from Haiti and possess legal status in the country. Trump had earlier vowed to expel the estimated 15 to 20 million individuals who he claims are or will be residing illegally in the country by the time he assumes office. On Friday, he reiterated his promise to execute the “most comprehensive deportations in our nation’s history,” commencing in Springfield and Aurora, Colorado, where internet gossip has blown out of proportion sporadic incidents of Venezuelan gang activity.
“This is rhetoric reminiscent of Hitler,” USA Today columnist Rex Huppke reacted on social media to Trump’s pronouncement. “That’s not an exaggeration. He’s devaluing legal immigrants, bizarrely stating he’ll expel Haitians to Venezuela. I’ve been following Trump since the start. He has degenerated to his most base, spiteful level, often displaying blatant racism.”
Schools and civic structures in Springfield have been the target of bomb threats recently, following Trump and his vice-presidential candidate Ohio Sen. JD Vance promoting baseless internet gossip that newly settled Haitian immigrants in the city were involved in pet theft and consumption. One reporter described the Trump campaign’s rhetoric as “blood libel.”
Between 12,000 and 15,000 Haitian immigrants have relocated to Springfield in recent years, with the vast majority residing there legally under temporary protected status.
“The majority of Americans who repudiate this gloomy, dystopian vision and the deceit inciting violence should unite to condemn this shocking display of hatred and to plot a different course for our nation.”
“It’s crucial to understand the broader strategy being employed by the Republican Party and its associates,” stated Vanessa Cárdenas, executive director of America’s Voice, on Friday. “The falsehoods and conspiracies regarding Haitians are part of a broader range of anti-immigrant and dehumanizing rhetoric that deliberately incites political violence.”
Cárdenas further commented: “Besides the lies about Haitians, which recall tropes like the antisemitic blood libel, Trump depicted this nation in increasingly violent and explicit terms… What is the likely reaction from a deranged supporter hearing those words and believing those threats? It is violence like the Haitian community fears, and that Jewish, Latino, and Black Americans have already experienced in places like Pittsburgh, El Paso, and Buffalo.”
Cárdenas also mentioned a pledge Trump made the previous Saturday that his extensive deportations would be “bloody.”
“The majority of Americans who reject this dark and dystopian vision and the lies courting violence should come together to denounce this outrageous spectacle of hatred and to chart a different direction for our nation,” urged Cárdenas.
Meanwhile, an immigrant rights organization in Colorado also voiced their opposition to Trump’s deportation threats.
“Trump’s fear tactics are as perilous as they are deceitful,” stated Gladis Ibarra, the co-executive director of the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition. “He disregards Aurora or Colorado. He’s exploiting us as political chess pieces to advance a racist agenda that taints our entire community, and we won’t be deceived. Immigrants are our educators, our neighbors, our parents, and our children. We won’t allow them to be vilified or torn from our communities.”
