Why is Ohio’s Governor Backing the Alleged MAGA Misinformers Considered ‘Trash’?

Why does Ohio’s Governor Back ‘Detestable’ Liars of the MAGA Movement?

Ohio’s Republican Governor Mike DeWine, known for his composed demeanor, labeled the assertion by GOP Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance that Haitians in Ohio consume pets as “nonsense” during an ABC News interview. He also condemned Vance’s false claim that Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, were “illegal aliens”, when in reality, they are residing legally.

One would assume that DeWine’s tolerance for these blatant lies has reached its limit, prompting him to sever ties with their originators. However, this assumption would be incorrect.

The title of his guest essay in the New York Times on Friday (“As Ohio’s Republican Governor, Here’s the Real Story about Springfield”) initially fosters optimism, until you read the details beneath the surface.

One might think that DeWine has had enough of these blatant lies, enough to sever ties with the originators, yet this is not the case.

DeWine passionately talks about his and his wife’s admiration for Springfield and its residents, highlighting how these dedicated Haitian immigrants are contributing to the revival of a town once on the brink of economic decline. DeWine portrays himself as a compassionate, truthful, and God-fearing individual who, by all accounts, should utterly despise anyone who intentionally spreads false information about his hometown and the hard-working immigrants who are breathing new life into it.

Just when it appears DeWine is about to disassociate himself from these individuals, he surprisingly defends them, stating that their approach is simply misguided: “As a supporter of former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance, I am disheartened to see them and others continue to perpetuate baseless statements and malign the legal immigrants residing in Springfield. Such rhetoric harms the city, its residents, and those who have dedicated their lives to living there… Their unfounded attacks against these Haitians – who are legally residing in the United States – obscure what should be a compelling argument about border control.”

Is there any falsehood that Trump/Vance could spread that would cause DeWine to withdraw his support?

DeWine, who outperformed Vance by nine points in the 2022 statewide elections, may soon face a challenge from the self-exiled orange emperor who always demands loyalty. While Trump’s political strategists may advise him to dismiss DeWine’s criticism, Trump may decide that DeWine needs a reality check. In Trump’s skewed perspective, a strong leader does not tolerate criticism without retaliating even more forcefully. If Trump remains true to his character, DeWine could soon be on the receiving end of the very “nonsense” lies he denounced.

To my knowledge, no other existing Republican official at or above the city level in Springfield has had the audacity to vehemently criticize the blatant lies about the Haitians. The last time we heard such criticisms from Republican leaders was after the events of January 6th, and since then, those who berated Trump have either left office, retracted their statements, or remained silent. At present, spreading lies about Haitians appears to be a small price to pay to remain in Trump’s good books. It’s one thing for Dick Cheney and Liz Cheney to confront him, but it’s an entirely different matter for any Republican who hopes to maintain their position while Trump still wields influence over his base.

For those wishing to see Trump defeated, the ideal scenario would be for Trump to stay true to his nature and brutally attack DeWine, forcing the governor either to capitulate or to stand his ground. But even if he becomes a target, does DeWine have the courage to distance himself from these unscrupulous liars?

The verdict is still pending. Up to now, Springfield’s most renowned resident has demonstrated the courage to criticize the “nonsense” lies about his hometown, but he falls short when it comes to confronting the liars who propagate such falsehoods.

In today’s intimidated Republican party, this seems to pass for bravery.
