President Joe Biden of the United States attracted heavy criticism on Tuesday for echoing the Israeli military’s assertion that the recent killing of a U.S. citizen in the disputed West Bank was unintentional. This account has been refuted by eyewitnesses.
While addressing the press, Biden described the fatal shooting of 26-year-old human rights activist Aysenur Eygi, a recent alumna of the University of Washington, as “seemingly accidental.” He added that the bullet that killed her, hitting her in the head, had “bounced off the ground.”
U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) condemned Biden’s comments as “unacceptable” and “inexcusable.”
“We cannot blindly accept the IDF’s explanation that this was an ‘accident,'” Jayapal asserted. “We do not have confirmation of that, which is why an independent investigation is necessary. What form of accountability can there be if we continue to furnish the weapons contrary to our own laws?”
Responding to Biden’s comments, Trita Parsi, the executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, stated that “if you are an American, your president not only supplies Israel with the bullets that Israel uses to kill you.”
“Not only does he not protest after Israel has taken your life,” he continued. “Worse still, he even comes up with offensive justifications to absolve Israel of the blame for ending your life.”
The remarks made by the U.S. president echoed a statement by the IDF released earlier that day, which claimed its internal investigation “concluded that it is highly probable” Eygi “was unintentionally and indirectly hit by IDF fire that was not aimed at her,” but at another protestor that the Israeli military labeled as “the main instigator” of a “riot.”
“This was no accident and those responsible must face justice.”
The Israeli military’s depiction of the events leading up to the lethal shooting of Eygi has been contested by eyewitnesses.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Sunday that it had spoken to three witnesses who claimed that Israeli soldiers shot Eygi “without cause” and that “there had been no hostilities at the time.”
“First we heard a shot hitting a dumpster where two volunteers were seated and then there was a shot that struck Aysenur in the head,” an eyewitness, who was identified as American, told the newspaper. “I was instantly shocked when I saw her lying motionless on the ground. It was a direct shot to the head, not a coincidence. She was being extremely cautious among all the volunteers; she and her friends were the furthest back, in what we thought was the safest spot.”
Shortly after echoing the Israeli military’s conclusions, Biden issued a statement on Wednesday expressing his “outrage and deep sorrow over the death of Aysenur Eygi,” adding that “the gunfire that resulted in her death is wholly unacceptable.”
The president referenced the results of Israel’s internal investigation once more, stating that it suggested Eygi’s death “was a tragic mistake stemming from an unwarranted escalation.”
Despite promising to “maintain close communication with Israeli and Palestinian authorities regarding the circumstances that led to Aysenur’s death” and demanding “complete accountability,” Biden did not commit to initiating a U.S. investigation.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, issued a separate statement on Wednesday, calling Eygi’s death “a horrific tragedy that should never have occurred.”
Harris added, “Israel’s preliminary investigation indicated it was a tragic mistake for which the IDF is responsible. We will continue to press the Israeli government for answers and for ongoing access to the investigation’s findings to ensure our confidence in the results. Full accountability is essential.”
Eygi’s family, who have urged Biden to mandate an independent investigation of their loved one’s death, revealed that the U.S. president has not yet personally expressed his condolences.
Hamid Ali, Eygi’s partner, shared on Tuesday that “we have been waiting for four days for President Biden to make the right move: To call us, express his condolences, and inform us that he is ordering an independent investigation into Aysenur’s killing.”
“This was not an accident,” Ali added, “and those responsible must be held to account.”
