What has become of Nestor Carbonell, who played the ageless Richard in the TV series “Lost”?
It’s hard to forget the character of Richard from Lost! He is one of those iconic faces of the series, shrouded in mystery, as no matter the era depicted in the show, Richard is always there, looking the same. In other words, he doesn’t age. Why is that? How? These are some of the mysteries the show’s writers eventually unraveled.
First appearing off the island to recruit Juliet (played by Elizabeth Mitchell), Richard is later found on the island as the right-hand man to Ben, leading the “Others,” the island’s “natives.” Initially confident and thinking he understood everything, Richard gradually loses his bearings as the Man in Black embarks on his quest to kill Jacob, or as he faces the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 who begin to time travel.
One of Lost’s Most Mysterious Characters
Portrayed by Nestor Carbonell, Richard Alpert kept his secrets until the show’s sixth and final season, specifically in its ninth episode. We learn that he arrived on the island in the 19th century as a shipwreck survivor from the Black Rock, where he had been imprisoned. His encounter with Jacob, the island’s protector, grants him a magical power. Unable to bring back the woman he loved, he chooses immortality.
Nestor Gastón Carbonell was born in New York to Cuban parents and attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts with Matthew Fox, who would go on to play Jack in Lost—a coincidence worthy of an episode of the show!
Famous Before Lost
He began his acting career in 1989 with minor TV appearances but started gaining recognition through his role opposite Brooke Shields in the sitcom “Susan!”, which remains relatively unknown in France. He stayed on this show from 1996 to 2000, then moved into leading roles in films with “Jack the Dog” (2001) and “Manhood” (2003), both directed by Bobby Roth.
He then returned mostly to television before being cast in Lost. He was initially set for a guest role since he had just been cast as a regular on the series “Cane,” but when it was canceled after 13 episodes, Carbonell was free to continue as Richard. During the show, he also played the mayor of Gotham City in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”
Immortal in Lost, What Next?
Following Lost, Nestor Carbonell has alternated between movies (Cristeros, The Dark Knight Rises, Imperium) and TV shows (Ringer, State of Affairs), eventually landing another notable role as the sheriff in the series “Bates Motel.”
Since 2019, he has been portraying TV anchor Yanko Flores on the fictional network UBS in “The Morning Show,” starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. He also found time to participate in the medical series “Pulse” (2025) and alongside Hiroyuki Sanada in “Shōgun” (2024).
