“Astérix and Obelix: On Her Majesty’s Service” airs on France 2 this Sunday, October 19. Here’s an update on what’s next for the beloved Gaulish village.
Tonight at 9 PM, France 2 will broadcast “Astérix and Obelix: On Her Majesty’s Service,” directed by Laurent Tirard and released in 2012. This film marks the fourth live-action adaptation of the series, featuring Gérard Depardieu and Édouard Baer as the iconic Gaulish duo.
It’s a perfect moment to check in on the upcoming adaptations of the legendary comic series by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, which has been translated into 14 languages and is available in 117 countries.
Returning in Animated Form
Following “The Battle of the Chiefs,” an animated series by Alain Chabat that premiered on Netflix in April, the world of the indomitable Gaulish village is set to welcome a new animated production in 2026.
M6 Studio is indeed preparing a new animated film, entrusted to Alexandre Heboyan with the screenplay penned by the duo Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte. This production boasts a budget of 30 million euros. The successful screenwriting pair, recently acclaimed for “The Count of Monte Cristo,” promises to deliver more thrilling adventures for our favorite Gauls.
Titled “Astérix – The Kingdom of Nubia,” the feature film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 2, 2026.
With such a talented team behind the scenes, fans can expect the magic potion of success to continue to dazzle.
Jonathan Cohen Takes the Helm
But there’s also a new live-action film in the works! And it’s the highly popular Jonathan Cohen who will take the helm, following in the footsteps of Guillaume Canet.
Cohen is no stranger to directing; he has already achieved significant success with the two series he directed, “La Flamme” and “Le Flambeau,” both aired on CANAL+.
This new project is expected to draw inspiration from the cult animated film “The Twelve Tasks of Asterix,” created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in 1976, which drew 2.2 million viewers to French theaters.
Jonathan Cohen is currently working on the script, with filming scheduled for 2026. This represents a significant passing of the torch for the actor, who returns to the comic book world after playing Graindemaïs in “Astérix and Obélix: The Middle Kingdom,” the latest installment in the franchise directed by Guillaume Canet. No release date or cast members have been announced yet.
