After seven years of captivating and mind-bending entertainment, the series “You” concludes today on Netflix. How does it all end and what fate awaits Joe?
The time has come for the series to conclude, and everyone is eager to find out Joe’s final fate. Netflix has released season 5 of “You” today, marking the series’ conclusion. In these 10 new episodes, our protagonist, played by Penn Badgley, returns to New York after escaping to London. While abroad, he meets Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), a wealthy businesswoman whom he marries.
Homecoming
Under his real name and protected by Kate, Joe once again walks the streets of his beloved city. But his past demons quickly catch up to him. Trouble begins when Kate’s uncle threatens to overthrow her, prompting Joe to take matters into his own hands and kill him to protect his wife and son.
Joe also decides to kidnap his sister-in-law Maddie (Anna Camp) to leverage her twin sister Reagan (also played by Anna Camp) into dropping her investigation on Kate. Joe manages to persuade Maddie to kill Reagan and assume her real-life identity.
When Kate discovers all of Joe’s schemes, she starts to distrust him. She learns that he has been having an affair with Bronte (Madeline Brewer), an employee at his bookstore.
The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
As usual, each season sees Joe falling for a woman, becoming obsessed, and eventually killing her. This time, he becomes infatuated with Louise, a literature enthusiast who adopts Brontë as her pen name. Joe hires her at his bookstore, offers her an apartment, and ultimately, they become intimate.
Upon discovering that she is being stalked by her ex-boyfriend, Joe follows them to a secluded house. Inevitably, he kills his rival in front of Bronte—and the internet. Two of her friends arrive just in time, phones in hand, to catch Joe at the crime scene.
At this moment, Joe realizes he’s been catfished: Louise is actually one of the friends of Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), the woman Joe loved in season 1. They spent three years gathering evidence to prove Joe was responsible for her death, not Dr. Nicky (John Stamos).
However, Bronte/Louise falls in love with Joe and defends him to the police, claiming he acted in self-defense. Freed by his wife’s lawyers, Joe is now portrayed in the media as a criminal and must live in hiding, especially since Kate has filed for divorce and won custody of their son.
Solitude, I Call Your Name
To make amends, Kate travels to London to free Nadia, who was wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of Rhys Montrose in season 4. The two women, aided by Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) who miraculously returns, manage to trap Joe in his plexiglass cage and demand he confess his crimes. Louise realizes she has fallen for a serial killer and was thoroughly deceived.
Joe escapes his cage and violently attacks his wife, even shooting her. At that moment, Maddie enters the bookstore and sets it on fire. Surrounded by flames and thinking it’s the end, Joe confesses his crimes. But Louise arrives to save him. The pair flee the city to isolate themselves in a house.
While Joe believes he’ll live out his life with the woman he loves, she is actually plotting her revenge. Taking advantage of a vulnerable moment, she holds Joe at gunpoint: realizing he’s been duped again, he attacks her and confesses to killing Beck and intending the same fate for her.
The police soon arrive and arrest Joe. He is ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment for all the murders he committed. Kate, who survived the fire, leaves the business world and now cares for their son. Maddie happily lives with her deceased sister’s husband and is expecting twins.
As for Joe, he slowly descends into madness in prison, where he regularly receives letters from fans. The serial killer comes to believe that the problem doesn’t lie with him, but with society… Until the end, he sees himself as a victim rather than the misogynistic criminal he is. And that’s truly unfortunate.
All seasons of “You” are available on Netflix.
