The trailer for season 3 of “The Diplomat” features President played by Allison Janney “on the verge of doing something apocalyptically stupid,” and the newly released footage certainly ratchets up the suspense. Netflix has just unveiled the first glimpse at what promises to be the most intense season yet of this gripping political thriller that has had viewers hooked since 2023.
A Major Constitutional Crisis
Picking up right where season 2 left off, the first scenes show Kate (Keri Russell), Hal (Rufus Sewell), and Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) discovering that President Rayburn (Michael McKean) has just passed away – making Grace the new Commander-in-Chief. This puts Ambassador Kate Wyler in an extremely precarious position.
“A terribly flawed woman is now president, and we are the only ones who know how flawed she is,” Kate remarks in the trailer, referring to the season 2 revelation of Penn’s involvement in an attack on a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf.
The tension escalates when Kate issues this chilling warning: “The president is about to do something apocalyptically stupid.“
Broken Alliances and Explosive Secrets
In season 3, Kate experiences the particular nightmare of getting what she wished for. She has just accused Vice President Grace Penn of orchestrating a terrorist plot and admitted that she herself aspires to the VP role. But now the president is dead – her husband Hal might have inadvertently caused his death – and Grace Penn now leads the White House.
The trailer teases romance (featuring a new character played by Aidan Turner from Poldark!), secrets, and suspense, with “catastrophic information” ready to burst into the open. Facing accusations, Grace Penn counters: “When all the facts are on the table, I won’t look so bad.“
