20 Years On, No One Spotted This Huge Editing Blunder in ‘One Tree Hill’ with Chad Michael Murray

More than 20 years since its debut, the TV series “One Tree Hill” still boasts a legion of fans who continue to watch episodes regularly, often spotting previously unnoticed editing slip-ups. Here’s an example!

If you’ve caught every episode of our show “Mismatched Scenes”, you know well: movies are full of all sorts of mistakes, from visible crew members to too-obvious stand-ins, and TV shows are no exception.

A few years back, a fan re-watching “One Tree Hill” shared on TikTok a basketball game scene between the main characters, Nathan and Lucas, from Season 2, Episode 20, where Karen’s son has a rather odd face. The reason? It wasn’t Chad Michael Murray in some of the shots, and it was pretty obvious.

Training That Paid Off…

Chad Michael Murray, seen last summer in “Freaky Friday 2”, has always admitted he wasn’t much of a basketball player when he was cast as Lucas, who is naturally talented at the sport. However, after training with athletes who played the Ravens team members, he managed to hold his own, as he recently shared in an interview with People alongside James Lafferty, who played his brother.

“I learned enough to get by,” Chad Michael Murray said, before his co-star complimented him, noting it was “impressive” how he had improved over a few months of preparation and that it was “proof of how much he cared about the show.” He added, “Even if you didn’t like basketball, you loved the show and wanted it to be as good as it could be, and that was evident in how quickly you learned.”

…But Not Completely!

Yet, the actor who portrayed Lucas did indeed need a stand-in for certain scenes, including the one spotted by @sweetnikki23. His double is quite visible for several seconds, especially noticeable when the elder Scott leaps to block Nathan’s throw.

One might wonder about the necessity of using a stand-in for this sequence since Lucas doesn’t even touch the ball! Regardless, few viewers had noticed this little editing error before this TikTok video went viral. And if you’re keen to spot more such mistakes, “One Tree Hill” is available in full on Prime Video or HBO Max.
