A Legendary Character

When Smallville first hit television screens in 2001, many of Superman’s iconic cohorts were noticeably absent. Understandably so, as the series crafted by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar was focused on chronicling Clark Kent’s (Tom Welling) teenage years, prior to his transformation into Superman.

However, as the seasons progressed, beloved DC comic characters began to emerge, culminating in the season 4 debut of the legendary Lois Lane, the future love interest of the superhero. Canadian actress Erica Durance was cast to embody the young reporter, introduced as the cousin of Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack), a character specially created for the show.

It wasn’t until season 9 that Lois and Clark finally confessed their feelings and became a couple. The show concluded with its 10th season in 2011, with the couple on the verge of marriage, much to the delight of their ardent fans.

Lead in a Canadian Medical Drama

Following the conclusion of the superhero series, Erica Durance appeared in single-episode roles in series that didn’t make a lasting impact: the 2011 remake of Charlie’s Angels created by the Smallville duo, and David E. Kelley’s Harry’s Law (known for Ally McBeal, Big Little Lies) starring Kathy Bates.

By 2012, Durance secured a leading role in the Canadian series Saving Hope: Beyond Medicine. In this medical drama, which also starred Michael Shanks (Stargate SG-1) and Daniel Gillies (The Originals), she played Alex Reid, a surgeon struggling with grief and clinging to hope after her fiancé, the head of surgery at Hope Zion Hospital in Toronto, is left in a coma following a car accident. The show spanned five seasons, concluding in 2017.

Alongside Saving Hope, she had a minor role in the 2012 comedy Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie and starred in the small Canadian sci-fi film Painkillers in 2015 alongside Tahmoh Penikett (Battlestar Galactica) and Lesley-Ann Brandt (Lucifer). These represent her only film roles post-Smallville.

A Flurry of Christmas TV Movies, and More

Indeed, most of Erica Durance’s subsequent career has been on the small screen, diving into the niche of Christmas TV movies, much like many other actors from 2000s series. From 2009 to 2024, she starred in eight holiday films, mostly produced in her native Canada, including titles like Christmas Stars, The Christmas Cabin, A Christmas Card Love, The Enchanted Christmas Cake, We Need a Little Christmas, Ms. Christmas Comes to Town, Happy Holidays from Cherry Lane, and Private Princess Christmas.

She also appeared in TV movies of other genres, including dramas and thrillers, such as Shadow on Marriage (2014), The McBride Sisters (2022), Girl in the Shed: The Kidnapping of Abby Hernandez (2022), Unexpected Grace (2023), Girl Taken (2025), and several romances like Color My World with Love (2022) and A Scottish Love Scheme (2024).

In 2019, Durance returned to series television with a guest appearance in season 3 of the Canadian detective show Private Eyes, led by Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills). She reprised her role in another episode the following season. And in 2024, she made a guest appearance in another detective series, Murder In A Small Town, which stars Kristin Kreuk, Clark Kent’s other love interest from Smallville, as the lead actress.

Moreover, Erica Durance hasn’t completely left the superhero world behind after the end of the series that made her a household name. In 2017, she took over the role originally played by Laura Benanti of Alura Zor-El, Supergirl’s Kryptonian mother, in seasons 3 and 5 of the series Supergirl.

She also participated in the major crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths in 2019, which brought together all the Arrowverse series, where she reprised her iconic role of Lois Lane alongside Tom Welling, in a scene that left millions of fans nostalgic!
