Desperate Housewives Universe Returns 13 Years Later: What’s Happening Now?

Kerry Washington has announced the upcoming series “Wisteria Lane.” The former “Scandal” star revealed that this new show will reinterpret “Desperate Housewives,” rather than remake it. Here are her insights.

During an early-month appearance on The View to promote her latest movie with Omar Sy, Shadow Force, Kerry Washington confirmed the development of Wisteria Lane, a reimagining of ABC’s hit drama series Desperate Housewives. The project is being developed by Onyx Collective, a content brand owned and operated by Disney Entertainment.

However, when Ana Navarro, co-host of The View, referred to the project as a “remake of Desperate Housewives,” Washington corrected her, clarifying that the new series is “inspired by” the popular 2004 series.

“I can’t reveal too much. It’s a recent announcement and it’s still in development,” said Kerry Washington. “The idea is that we are in a new era, facing new challenges. We’re exploring what’s happening in this cul-de-sac now. It’s really exciting.”

When asked if Wisteria Lane would feature “new women, old ones?” meaning whether the show would include new or original characters, Washington remained vague, mentioning she couldn’t disclose more at this time.

As reported by Deadline, Wisteria Lane, penned by Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant), is described as a fun, sexy, darkly comedic mystery soap opera, in the style of Desperate Housewives, which starred iconic characters Bree, Susan, Lynette, and Gaby, portrayed by Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, and Eva Longoria, respectively.

The plot will center around a group of five very different, sometimes even adversarial friends who all live on the picturesque cul-de-sac known as “Wisteria Lane”. On the surface, all of Wisteria Lane’s neighbors seem to be living the dream: beautiful homes, perfect families, shiny SUVs in the driveway. But hidden behind those white picket fences and cheerful Instagram posts are secrets.

Wisteria Lane is produced by Natalie Chaidez, alongside Kerry Washington and Pilar Savone through their production company Simpson Street, and Stacey Sher via Shiny Penny. It remains unknown if Washington might appear in the series. The studio behind the project is 20th TV.

Marc Cherry, the creator and executive producer of Desperate Housewives, did not participate in the presentation but is aware of the project and could potentially be involved in some capacity, according to some sources. Currently, there are no plans for characters from the original series to appear in Wisteria Lane – but one can always hope!

While waiting to someday watch the new series, Desperate Housewives is available in its entirety on Disney+.
