Michael Madsen’s passing on July 3, 2025, at the age of 67, resurfaced a lesser-known anecdote from his career. Before becoming synonymous with Quentin Tarantino’s films, the American actor had a brief encounter with a French comedian that did not lead to a collaboration.

An Unexpected Cameo

In 2003, Laurent Baffie stepped behind the camera to direct “Les Clefs de bagnole,” an absurd comedy for which he also wrote the script and starred as a man on a quest to find… his car keys. Daniel Russo was among the lead actors in this deliberately offbeat film.

The opening of the movie is based on a unique concept: Laurent Baffie repeatedly approaches well-known producers and several French celebrities, asking them to participate in his project. All appear as themselves and sequentially decline, creating a lengthy comical sequence where no one seems willing to join the venture.

Michael Madsen Was Also Among the Declines

Among the many personalities approached was Michael Madsen. The actor, well-known for his roles in “Reservoir Dogs,” “Kill Bill,” and “Donnie Brasco,” actually filmed a scene for the movie. However, his contribution was ultimately excluded from the final cut and is only visible in the DVD’s bonus features.

His cameo is extremely brief, lasting just two seconds, but his rejection is unequivocal. Facing Laurent Baffie, he simply states: “Get out of here, it’s a no!

He thus joins the extensive list of personalities who, in these deleted scenes, turned down the director’s offer, including Andy Garcia, Éric & Ramzy, Vincent Cassel, Bernard Tapie, Christophe Lambert, Romain Duris, and Alain Delon.

Here are the refusals in question:

A Subtle Nod to Tarantino

The film also maintains a more subtle connection with Michael Madsen. In a robbery scene, the character played by Daniel Russo makes a reference to Quentin Tarantino.

This detail is significant as Daniel Russo had previously been part of the “Reservoir Dogs” universe. In the French version of the film, he dubbed the voice for the character played by Harvey Keitel, while Michael Madsen was one of the main actors in the famous movie.

“Les Clefs de bagnole” is currently only available on DVD.
