To secure Arnold Schwarzenegger for “Terminator 3,” he presented the studio with an astonishing list of demands… and he managed to get every single one of them! Sometimes, all you have to do is ask…
After the monumental success of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in 1991, the idea of a third installment was frequently discussed. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger was adamant that he would not participate without James Cameron as the director.
Cameron Encourages Schwarzenegger to Go Big
As reported by WhatCulture, Schwarzenegger maintained this stance for nearly a decade until he discussed the possibility with Cameron during early talks of a third film. Recognizing that the T-800 character was as much Schwarzenegger’s as his own, Cameron advised the actor to demand an outrageous fee to see how the studio would react.
Despite Schwarzenegger’s lack of genuine interest in a third film without Cameron, he followed the director’s advice and demanded a “pay-or-play” contract worth $30 million, ensuring he would be paid whether the film was made or not. The negotiations stretched over 18 months, with 21 different contract drafts, as Schwarzenegger continually sought to secure more benefits.
Private Jets, Bonuses, and Bodyguards: An Outrageous Contract
Among Schwarzenegger’s demands were $3 million upfront, an additional $1.6 million for each week of production delay, $1.5 million for the use of private jets, along with round-the-clock bodyguards and limousines at his disposal.
Incredibly, he received everything he asked for. Considering he was paid $750,000 for the original film and $15 million for Terminator 2, Schwarzenegger’s negotiating skills were formidable. The producers might have regretted their concessions when “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” ultimately directed by Jonathan Mostow, earned less than its predecessor, released 12 years earlier.
“Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” is available on VOD, and the first two installments are also streaming on HBO Max.
