Clint Eastwood’s Best Action Saga: Everyone Forgot He Played 4 Roles!

When you think of “Dirty Harry,” Clint Eastwood naturally comes to mind. However, there’s another actor who also appeared in several installments of the series, often going unnoticed by the majority of viewers. Did you know that?

Enthusiasts of the “Dirty Harry” series are well acquainted with Clint Eastwood portraying the iconic Harry Callahan. Yet, few have realized that another actor also featured in multiple films of the franchise, each time playing a different character.

A Subtle Actor Who Became a Series Staple

This actor is Albert Popwell, an African-American actor born in 1926 in New York City. Before turning to acting, he started as a professional dancer and then made his mark in numerous television series beginning in the 1960s.

Popwell is best remembered for his repeated collaborations with Clint Eastwood. He appeared four times alongside the star in the “Dirty Harry” saga.

In the first film, “Dirty Harry” (1971), he played one of the bank robbers wounded on the ground facing Harry Callahan. It is to him that Clint Eastwood delivers the now-iconic line: “Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Four Different Roles in the Same Franchise

Two years later, in “Magnum Force” (1973), Albert Popwell completely changed roles to play Gigi Wilson, a pimp and criminal nicknamed “Pimp”. He returned in “The Enforcer” (1976) as Big Ed Mustapha, and later, he portrayed a police officer and partner of Clint Eastwood in “Sudden Impact” (1983).

Interestingly, despite his multiple appearances in the franchise, many viewers never realized he was the same actor. Considered a good luck charm for Eastwood, Popwell was also offered a role in the final film of the saga, “The Dead Pool” (1988), but scheduling conflicts prevented him from participating.
