32 Years After Her Debut, She’s Now One of TV’s Biggest Stars!

She began her career as a child in a thriller alongside the late Hollywood legend Donald Sutherland. Today, you know her by one name: Penny…

Kaley Cuoco gained worldwide fame portraying Penny, the neighbor to Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) in The Big Bang Theory. Even though her own partner didn’t know she was a TV star, most viewers now immediately associate her with this iconic role. However, the successful actress started her screen career long before her time on the legendary sitcom.

Indeed, Kaley was just 6 years old when she began her modeling career, which soon led to her appearing in front of the camera for numerous commercials. Shortly thereafter, she landed her first role in a movie alongside the recently deceased Hollywood legend, Donald Sutherland (Hunger Games).

The thriller Quicksand: No Escape, made for American television, might be forgotten but it marked the beginning of Kaley Cuoco’s career, which has been studded with Hollywood stars. Not only did Sutherland star in the film, but Felicity Huffman and Tim Matheson also joined the young actress on the big screen when she was just 7 years old.

Produced by USA Network, the plot revolves around the dedicated architect Scott Reinhardt (Matheson), while his wife Julianna (Huffman) suspects that he might not actually be spending his afternoons and evenings at the office. She hires private detective Murdoch (Sutherland) to follow him, who in turn pursues his own agenda and frames Scott for murder. Kaley Cuoco played Reinhardt’s little daughter.

The star of The Flight Attendant went on to play minor roles in movies such as the 1995 action science fiction film Virtuosity and Jennifer Aniston’s 1997 comedy Picture Perfect, as well as in several TV series including 7th Heaven. She eventually gained wider recognition through her role as Bridget Hennessy in the sitcom 8 Simple Rules with John Ritter, Katey Sagal, and David Spade, a part she played for three seasons earning her a Teen Choice Award. She was later seen in the final season of the beloved series Charmed alongside Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, and Rose McGowan.

A year later, CBS approached her as they were assembling a cast for a comedy titled The Big Bang Theory, and the rest is history. It’s important to note that she wasn’t the original choice for the pilot episode, but it was indeed she who ultimately took on the role of Penny (who famously has no last name) for the 12 seasons that followed.

The Big Bang Theory is available on Max.
