In 2016, Tim Burton crafted a unique and enthralling film that aligns with his fascination for outcasts and misfits. Available on Disney+, it’s perfect for a thrilling family movie night… but it’s best suited for ages 10 and up!
Before diving into his project “Wednesday,” Tim Burton gifted us with a dark and eerie film that only he could envision: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Starring Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, and Samuel L. Jackson, this movie promises to delight the whole family with a healthy dose of chills—though it’s recommended for viewers aged 10 and older.
Suitable for Ages 10 and Up
Miss Peregrine introduces us to Jacob, a quiet and shy young man. Following his grandfather’s death, he uncovers clues to a mysterious world that lead him to a magical place: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
However, the mystery and danger intensify as he gets to know the residents, their bizarre abilities, and their formidable enemies. Ultimately, Jacob learns that his own unique “peculiarity” is the key to saving his new friends.
The film is an adaptation of a novel by Ransom Riggs published in 2011. With its dark, slightly scary, and somewhat macabre atmosphere, the story seemed tailor-made for Tim Burton, a director known for his love of freaks and other marginalized characters.
Quintessential Tim Burton
“The moment we read the manuscript, we knew Tim Burton was the perfect director for the adaptation. It was as if it had been written just for him,” stated producer Jenno Topping.
This film is as if The Goonies met Edward Scissorhands! Combine the themes of both movies and you get Miss Peregrine, a universe where children possess unique gifts, battle evil foes, and experience incredible adventures.
To portray Jacob, the story’s hero, Tim Burton selected the young British actor Asa Butterfield, who was 19 years old in 2016. The actor first gained prominence in 2011 with Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, before going head-to-head with Harrison Ford in Ender’s Game and breaking out in Sex Education.
“Asa has a very special sensitivity and he’s a deep thinker. It was easy to see him as a Peculiar. He brings a depth to the role, as if he’s always uncovering something new. Asa truly conveys what Jacob is going through and what many teenagers experience. Asa doesn’t fake it. He’s both a delightful boy and a moving actor,” the director shared during the film’s promotion.
