Consulted by Canal+, Philippe Charlier, a forensic doctor and expert in fantastic creatures, shared his uncompromising view on the matter. Charlier is also known for his work in archeo-anthropology and paleopathology, and famously received permission from Russian authorities to examine a fragment of a skull and teeth purported to belong to Hitler to verify their authenticity.

He was asked to watch a scene from Twilight, specifically the baseball sequence, and comment on the vampire depiction. “It’s just ugly,” he stated bluntly. “It’s truly dreadful. It’s almost unbearable, this sort of thing. It’s the absolute bottom of vampire movies,” he continued emphatically.

It’s almost unbearable, this sort of thing. It’s the absolute bottom of vampire movies.

“There’s no soul. And then, there’s no anthropological interest. It’s a waste of time. The vampire has become a common, banal, sexy, fashionable figure. Plus, they’re not gloomy, they don’t have fangs out all the time. Well, they are still pale. You can’t do away with all the traditional elements,” analyzed Philippe Charlier.

Sexy Vampires?

“Basically, they’re just like everyone else, except they are vampires, and that adds a little extra something, almost sexy in this case,” he added. “Would you recommend any movie from the saga?” the journalist asked. “I recommend the end credits. That’s actually the best part, in my opinion,” concluded the expert, with a touch of dark humor.

As a reminder, Twilight introduces us to Isabella Swan, a 17-year-old who moves to Forks, a rainy small town in Washington state, to live with her father. She expects her new life to be as dull as the town itself. However, at her new high school, she becomes deeply intrigued by a peculiar group of siblings, two girls and three boys.

Bella falls hopelessly in love with one of them, Edward Cullen. A sensual and dangerous relationship then begins between the two young people: by the time Isabella realizes Edward is a vampire, it’s already too late.
