If you believe Cinderella’s dress is blue, you might be in for a surprise.
No, Cinderella’s dress isn’t actually blue. Sure, it’s blue in all the costumes available online, yes, it’s blue in Disney park parades, and indeed, it’s blue on virtually every toy related to the movies. However, in the original 1950 Disney film, it’s not blue at all.
The iconic ball gown that Cinderella wears while dancing with the prince to the famous song “So This is Love,” originally performed by Ilene Woods and Mike Douglas, is actually silver, or white and silver. Here’s the proof:
So why do we think it’s blue?
There are several explanations for this common misconception. First, many scenes of the dance occur in shadows, away from the bright candles and chandeliers, which turn the white into a sort of bluish-gray (see the video below).
Additionally, Disney itself has played a role in this color transformation. This is evident in the musical parades at Disney parks where Cinderella’s dress is invariably blue (at least since the 1970s), and in the official live-action Disney movie about the character, where actress Lily James also wears a stunning blue gown:
Lastly, the successive scanning and restoration of the film (conversion to VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K) have consistently enhanced the blue hue while diminishing the original silver, “printing the legend” rather than the truth:
Interestingly, the original Cinderella doll sold in 1950 featured neither blue, silver, nor white as the character’s dress was actually pink. It merely wore a sash labeled “Cinderella.” So, when did this change happen? It’s unclear, but the different restorations and wear of the original film reels could be the cause, though it’s not certain.
In any case, next time you see a child dressed in a blue Cinderella gown… say nothing. Just let the Disney magic sparkle in their eyes.
