The mastermind behind “Lost”, “Watchmen”, and “The Leftovers” is back with a new thrilling series for HBO, and expectations are sky-high!
Since the 2019 miniseries Watchmen, the brilliant writer Damon Lindelof had not collaborated with HBO, a partnership he evidently missed. Soon, the creator will return with not one, but two original series airing on HBO Max in France: an adaptation of the DC Comics universe titled Lanterns and a brand new miniseries called The Chain, which was just announced for a 2027 release.
What is The Chain About?
The story revolves around Rachel Klein, who drops her daughter off at the bus stop and starts her day as usual. However, everything changes with a call from an unknown number: a woman informs her that she has kidnapped her daughter, Kylie, who is tied up and gagged in the back of her car.
To see her daughter again, Rachel must follow precise instructions: pay a ransom and kidnap another child. This isn’t just any kidnapping: the caller is also a mother whose son has been abducted, and if Rachel fails to comply, the boy will die. Rachel is now part of the chain.
An “Exhilarating” Project
Based on the novel by Adrian McKinty, The Chain is a dream project for Lindelof, who told Deadline that he was instantly captivated by the unique and bold premise of the book: “As soon as I heard the novel’s original and daring premise, I was shocked, amazed, and angry that I hadn’t thought of it myself… I have always dreamt of adapting a major thriller, and this one has all the dark, strange, and exhilarating elements that ignite my imagination.”
In its announcement, HBO also noted that Lindelof was hired to “develop the mythology of McKinty’s thriller” not just adapt it. This news is sure to excite fans of the creator (including us), known for his skill in crafting worlds as mysterious as they are compelling, as he demonstrated with LOST and The Leftovers.
The miniseries The Chain will soon be available on HBO Max.
