As “Marsupilami” enjoys success, Philippe Lacheau is not short on ideas. Although he is frequently asked about “Babysitting 3,” the sequel most requested by fans is for “Nicky Larson,” potentially crossing over with Cat’s Eyes.
Is there a sequel in the works for Nicky Larson? There are no plans yet, but fans regularly express their desire for it to Philippe Lacheau, even more so than for a third Babysitting movie. Although “Nicky Larson and the Cupid’s Perfume” (released in 2018) did not perform as well as his other films (with nearly 1.7 million viewers in theaters, still a respectable figure), this live-action adaptation continues to be supported by a dedicated group of fans.
A Nicky Larson Sequel with Cat’s Eyes?
When discussing the possibility of another sequel, Philippe Lacheau revealed during his appearance on the AlloCiné’s Grand Ecran show: “People keep asking me for Nicky Larson 2. It’s the least successful film at the box office among those I’ve directed. It did well, but not as well as the others. Yet, it’s the sequel people ask for the most. It’s really interesting. Elodie (Fontan) is really pushing for it and definitely wants to do another. We’ve considered it. Since it’s the least successful of all, does it really make sense to do a sequel? But indeed, a crossover with the world of Cat’s Eyes, even though there’s the TF1 series, is inspiring. I had revisited all the mangas (while preparing Nicky Larson) and it’s so rich. I have a lot of ideas if there’s to be a sequel. It’s not planned but you never know.“
“The Best Response to Criticism is the Film Itself”
The release of “Nicky Larson and the Cupid’s Perfume” marked Philippe Lacheau’s first confrontation with internet ‘haters’.
“When you do an adaptation, as I discovered with Nicky Larson, you know you’re exposing yourself to the gatekeepers,” he continued on Grand Ecran. “It’s natural. But the feedback is never the same between people who watch the full movie and those who just see a few images online. The best answer to the critics has always been the film itself.“
A Sequel to Babysitting?
Regarding Babysitting 3, Philippe Lacheau explained following the release of 3 Jours Max: “It’s not that we don’t want to do it, it’s just that we haven’t yet found the RIGHT idea. We definitely don’t want to disappoint people. It would be terrible for us to make a third installment that ends up disappointing. When we do it, we want to really have the right idea.“
