Why Harrison Ford Missed Out on Being the Hero of This Hit Netflix Crime Series!

Recently added to Netflix, the crime series “The Staircase” has been receiving a warm reception from users of the popular streaming platform. It’s quickly become the third most-watched series, with each of its 8 episodes running approximately 52 minutes.

Charged with Murder

Originally aired on Canal+ in 2022, the series follows the story of Michael Peterson, a novelist played by Colin Firth who is accused of murdering his wife Kathleen (Toni Collette) and the ensuing lengthy legal battle.

If this plot sounds familiar, it’s probably because it starts off similarly to “The Fugitive,” a 90s classic where Harrison Ford is accused of killing his spouse.

“Our Paths Diverged”

Indeed, when casting the lead role for their miniseries, the creators of “The Staircase” initially considered Harrison Ford.

“Initially, we turned to Harrison Ford. But our paths diverged because he had to work on Indiana Jones,” said showrunner Antonio Campos during an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2022. He went on to explain how he and his colleague Maggie Cohn eventually decided on Colin Firth:

“He had never taken on a role like this before, but we looked through his filmography and were continually struck by his dynamic presence.”
