Tonight on Netflix: Top Thriller with Robin Williams & Al Pacino Rated 4/5!

When Christopher Nolan brings together Al Pacino and Robin Williams for a monumental clash, it’s a concept we can all get behind! If you haven’t yet seen this thriller gem, head over to Netflix!

Christopher Nolan’s work extends beyond The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, or Oppenheimer! In 2002, the British director brought together two giants of international cinema, Al Pacino and Robin Williams, for a brilliantly tense thriller: Insomnia.

A Dark and Disturbing Thriller

The story follows Will Dormer (Pacino), a veteran detective at the end of his rope. He arrives in Alaska to hunt down the killer of a brutally murdered teenager. Along with his team, he sets a precise trap and manages to corner the suspect, but the suspect slips through the net and disappears into a thick fog.

Dormer chases him, and in the dense fog, a figure emerges. A gun is raised… He fires. A second later, everything changes: at his feet lies Hap, his partner, mistakenly shot dead. Shocked but driven by an immediate survival instinct, Dormer stages the scene. He retrieves the killer’s abandoned weapon and places it near the body, crafting a version of events that exonerates him.

However, he is not the only one privy to the truth. Walter Finch (Williams), the real murderer, has seen everything. A toxic standoff begins. Finch holds Dormer at his mercy and demands that he close the case by framing an innocent man: the victim’s ex-boyfriend. Dormer is trapped, caught between his mistake and his conscience.

Yet, it’s impossible to let this predator get away. But time is against him. Deprived of sleep and consumed by guilt, Dormer slowly unravels. His bearings shift, his certainties crack… and the line between justice and lies becomes increasingly blurred.

Robin Williams, Terrifying as a Villain

Insomnia shines as a thriller gem, especially due to Christopher Nolan’s brilliant casting decision to have Robin Williams play a villain, a stark contrast to his typical roles as the quintessential good guy in Hollywood. Following his performance in One Hour Photo, the comedian once again portrayed a complex and even sinister character.

For the late actor, it was thrilling to portray someone as despicable as Walter Finch, pushing him to explore the darkest areas of his personality: the allure of evil or its banality, for instance.

“Although traditionally considered a comedic star, we’ve always admired his performances in films like Dead Poets Society or Good Will Hunting. We thought he would be fascinating in the role of this smooth, impenetrable killer,” explained producer Andrew A. Kosove.

For Al Pacino, a frequent player of police roles, the character of Will Dormer was unlike any he had played before. He described it as a romantic, a very different kind of cop than those he had portrayed. “But, in truth, you find the same diversity among police as in the rest of the population, and I hope I managed to make Frank Serpico or Vincent Hanna from Heat distinct characters,” he highlighted at the time.

With Insomnia, Christopher Nolan wove a hellish web and already demonstrated his genius for directing. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t hesitate to check it out on Netflix for a taste of this dark cinematic masterpiece—you won’t regret it!
