Russell Crowe Regrets Turning Down This Movie 22 Years Ago!

Turning down a role can be costly, even for the biggest stars. Russell Crowe knows this all too well, haunted by a decision that might have reshaped his career. Read on to find out which one.

Over the years, Russell Crowe has built an impressive career with a series of wise choices. He has shone in vastly different films like L.A. Confidential and Gladiator, showcasing his wide-ranging talent. This versatility has solidified his standing as a major figure in the film industry.

Despite his successes, the actor admits to missing out on some significant opportunities. One in particular continues to haunt him. In a 2019 interview on the Nova FM show Fitzy and Wippa, as reported by DailyMail, he opened up about this regret: “The only [role] I truly regret, and maybe truly regret, is turning down the Johnny Cash biopic.”

A Missed Iconic Role

The project he passed on later became Walk The Line, directed by James Mangold. The lead role was eventually played by Joaquin Phoenix, who had previously shared the screen with Crowe in Gladiator, but as his adversary. Phoenix’s performance in the biopic earned him an Oscar nomination, underscoring the potential of the project that Russell Crowe had turned down.

However, Crowe’s refusal wasn’t due to a lack of interest. On the contrary, he had a personal connection to Johnny Cash. He explained, “It was one of those inner moral issues. I thought, ‘This is a dream job for me! I’ve been playing and singing Johnny Cash songs since I was a kid, but I felt like I would be getting something I didn’t deserve.’”

A Moral Choice Turns into Regret

Continuing in the same vein, he added, “Riding on Johnny Cash’s coattails to get Grammy nominations… it just seemed wrong.” This hesitation, guided by personal principles, ultimately cost him a project that was both critically acclaimed and financially successful, as the film was a hit at the box office.

It was only upon seeing the final film that Crowe truly felt the weight of his decision. He recalls, “From the first notes, as the camera moved through the prison, the heartaches began.” And he admitted, “Not only did I want to do this film, but it was exactly the kind of film I wanted to make.”

Ironically, Russell Crowe had already proven his skill in biopics with A Beautiful Mind by Ron Howard, about John Nash, for which he won an Oscar. Nevertheless, the chance to portray Johnny Cash remains a missed opportunity that he finds hard to forget.

Today, Walk The Line is available for streaming on Disney+, while those who wish to revisit the memorable clash between Crowe and Phoenix in Gladiator can turn to Prime Video.
