The French movie “Le Grand Bain” will be leaving Netflix on June 19th, marking the end of its availability on the platform.
Five years prior to the huge success of “L’Amour Ouf,” actor Gilles Lellouche made his directorial debut with “Le Grand Bain,” a dramatic comedy that brought together top talents of French cinema in a swimming pool setting. The cast includes Virginie Efira, Leïla Bekhti, Marina Foïs, Guillaume Canet, Benoît Poelvoorde, Mathieu Amalric, Philippe Katerine, and Alban Ivanov.
With its departure from Netflix approaching, we revisit this unique ensemble movie that rightfully earned its 4.3 million admissions and its status as a popular comedy.
What’s the Story?
The story unfolds in the corridors of their local municipal pool, where Bertrand, Marcus, Simon, Laurent, Thierry, and others train under the somewhat lax leadership of Delphine, a former swimming star. Together, they find a sense of freedom and purpose.
They devote their energy to a discipline traditionally dominated by women: synchronized swimming. It might sound like an odd idea, but this challenge gives them a new purpose in life.
An Unconventional Ensemble Film
While preparing for his role as an alcoholic attending support meetings in the film “Un singe sur le dos,” Gilles Lellouche was inspired to create “Le Grand Bain.” He shares, “Attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to prepare [for the film], I was amazed by the warmth, dialogue, and listening that occurred there, all without judgment. […] I loved that bubble of sharing.” This equal footing among characters is what makes ensemble films special, where no one character is above the others.
But why cast such well-known and individually recognizable actors for a group effect? This is where “Le Grand Bain” differentiates itself from typical ensemble films. Lellouche’s gamble was to have these stars play pathetic or even ridiculous characters to highlight that their greatness emerges from being together.
This approach parallels the very nature of a film actor: always awarded alone in ceremonies, yet the quality of their performance is deeply connected to those who act alongside them. Though they may be stars recognized on their own, in movies as in synchronized swimming, it’s only together that something beautiful can be created.
“Le Grand Bain” is available on Netflix until June 19th.
