Jenna Ortega Transforms Into a Robot in Sci-Fi Film ‘Klara and the Sun’ Before ‘Wednesday’ Season 3

Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel of the same name, “Klara and the Sun” released its radiant trailer, featuring Jenna Ortega as an artificial friend alongside Amy Adams, directed by Taika Waititi.

What better time than this heatwave week to release the trailer for “Klara and the Sun”? Probably none. Especially since the Taika Waititi-directed film is also timely, telling the story of an artificial friend, a robot created to prevent teenagers from feeling lonely, who will experience emotions within the first human family she joins.

Nobel Prize Winner

Given this premise, which is reminiscent of the beautiful “After Yang,” one might think of Philip K. Dick or Isaac Asimov, particularly known for the Robot Series. However, we are in the world of Kazuo Ishiguro, a great British author of Japanese origin, who won a Nobel Prize in 2017 and whose works are predominantly set in the past (“The Remains of the Day,” “A Pale View of Hills,” adapted into a film last year). Released in 2021, “Klara and the Sun” marks a slight departure for him, although he had already ventured into science fiction with “Never Let Me Go” and its story of clones.

From the images of the film, which is expected here on October 21, this fable will play on timelessness, with a retro aspect in several sets and outfits. It should also confirm that Jenna Ortega is still as skilled when it comes to playing characters who are out of step with humans, a talent she has already demonstrated with Tim Burton, in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and the series “Wednesday,” whose third season is currently in production.

Autumn Sun

While one might have imagined the director of “Sleepy Hollow” adapting this novel released in 2021, it is Taika Waititi who took on the task, and here he seems to return to the vein of “Jojo Rabbit” (which earned him an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020) or “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” far from the laughable Marvel films he had signed. Also featuring Amy Adams and Natasha Lyonne, “Klara and the Sun” has everything to brighten our autumn at the movies, after a more than likely stint at fall festivals, starting with Toronto.
