Must-See TV: Why The Big Bang Theory’s New Series Opener is the Year’s Best Idea!

In a world where TV series warn viewers about spoilers, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” takes a different approach… by spoiling the contents of its episodes right in the opening credits.

The opening sequence of the new “The Big Bang Theory” series thus encourages fans not to skip the intro as streaming platforms now often suggest.

A Unique Opening for Each Episode

Each episode features different messages on title cards, directly addressing the audience in an effort to break the fourth wall. Sometimes revealing anecdotes or delivering more personal messages (one episode encourages viewers to go to the bathroom and then wash their hands!), the credits also uniquely spoil the forthcoming episode.

“It’s the typical kind of crazy idea that we all loved. Who cares? We were all in for trying it out. Let’s see what happens if we put a spoiler in the credits,” co-creator Zak Penn told Deadline.

For the American screenwriter, the surprise no longer lies in the main information, but in the circumstances during which the famous spoiler occurs. Another original aspect of this opening is the song composed and performed by Danny Elfman.

A Special Request for Danny Elfman

Although Elfman is no stranger to TV (having worked on “Futurama,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Wednesday”), this is the first time he was asked to write a different theme for each episode of a series:

“I wrote it, Chuck (Lorre, the co-creator of the series) loved it and then he said, ‘Here’s the thing, I need you to make 10 different versions of this.’ I thought about it for two seconds. I had never been asked that before, but I simply said ‘No problem,’” the composer frequently collaborating with Tim Burton told the press.

A direct sequel to “The Big Bang Theory” but set in a universe all its own, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” can be seen weekly exclusively on HBO Max.
