Imagine starting your acting career by acting alongside Clint Eastwood! That’s exactly what happened to this major Hollywood star who had the good fortune of working with the cinematic legend.
In 1979, the iconic Clint Eastwood starred in one of his finest films, “Escape from Alcatraz,” directed by Don Siegel. The plot takes us back to 1962 and introduces us to Frank Morris, a prisoner known for his intelligence and composure. He is transferred to Alcatraz prison, known as an impregnable fortress from which escape is deemed impossible.
A Daring Escape
Quickly, Morris realizes that even the thickest walls have their weaknesses. Along with two other inmates, brothers John and Clarence Anglin, he crafts a daring and meticulous escape plan. Using makeshift tools and extraordinary patience, they begin to tunnel through their cell walls.
To hide their work, they create fake heads to fool the guards during their nightly absences. Every detail is critical, and any mistake could be fatal. In utmost secrecy, the three men prepare their escape to the icy waters of San Francisco Bay.
However, getting past the walls of Alcatraz is just the beginning: they still need to survive the ocean and its powerful currents. Based on the true 1962 escape, Don Siegel’s film thrives on constant tension and striking realism. Led by Clint Eastwood, “Escape from Alcatraz” tells a remarkable tale of the quest for freedom, a mystery that endures even today.
Regarded as a classic of cinema, this film marked the debut of a future Hollywood star, who made a brief appearance in a small role alongside Clint Eastwood. This star was 33 years old at the time, but he was not “too old for this stuff!”
Danny Glover’s First Role
The remarkable Danny Glover, who would later become a global superstar 8 years later with the first movie in the “Lethal Weapon” series. In “Escape from Alcatraz,” his character as a prisoner shares a brief scene with Frank Morris, played by Clint Eastwood.
As Morris passes by his cell with a cart full of books, Glover’s character asks him where English, played by Paul Benjamin, is located. The scene lasts only about ten seconds, but it undoubtedly represents a significant moment for the young actor.
Not only was he acting alongside a cinema legend like Eastwood, but he was also making his very first appearance on the big screen. Danny Glover would soon get used to acting alongside the biggest stars, eventually becoming a prominent figure in cinema himself.
Six years after his debut, he landed a role that revealed him to the wider audience in Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple” (1985), where he played Albert Johnson, the husband of Celie Harris-Johnson, portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg.
Two years later, he landed what would arguably become his most iconic role: Detective Roger Murtaugh in “Lethal Weapon” (1987). Alongside Mel Gibson, Glover formed a particularly close duo, whose on-screen chemistry contributed greatly to the franchise’s success.
Now 80 years old, Danny Glover is still not “too old for this stuff,” as he will reprise his role of Murtaugh in “Lethal Weapon 5,” which is expected to be directed by Mel Gibson, taking over from the late Richard Donner.
