Warning, spoilers ahead! This article contains significant revelations about “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” (2023). If you haven’t seen it, you might want to stop here to keep the final surprise intact.

When Bradley Cooper agreed to voice Rocket Raccoon in the original “Guardians of the Galaxy,” released in 2014, he had no idea that his journey would extend over a decade.

In 2024, while being honored for “Maestro” at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Cooper reflected on this vocal role that has become especially dear to him.

We shot the first film, and I never thought I’d be playing this role for over a decade. It’s crazy.

Theatrical Recording Sessions

Even though he never physically appears as the diminutive Marvel hero, Bradley Cooper fully committed to his performance. The scenes were already shot when he recorded his lines, but James Gunn would act opposite him to make the exchanges more dynamic.

Cooper likened their method to a theatrical performance, a process he fondly remembers.

James is wonderful, and we did it like a play. […] Because I record the voice after the movie has already been shot, they first showed me scenes, and then James read all the other parts, and we did it like a play, and it was really fun.

Rocket’s Past Finally Revealed

The character took on an even more intimate dimension in “Guardians of the Galaxy 3,” released in May 2023. This final installment of the trilogy delves into the origins of Rocket, a genetically modified animal who endured horrific experiments.

When James Gunn told him that this third film would finally explore the character’s backstory, Bradley Cooper was immediately excited. The outcome, however, moved him far more than he had anticipated.

I love Rocket Raccoon so much. And I loved doing this third film. When James [Gunn] told me it would be the origin story [of the character], I was so excited. I cried so much watching this film.

A Cry Fueled by Real Loss

Among the film’s most grueling scenes is one where Rocket watches his fellow captives die. To convey his character’s anguish, Bradley Cooper tapped into a deeply personal experience.

Revisit Rocket Raccoon’s heart-wrenching scream in the video below:

In an interview with Howard Stern, Cooper explained that the scream in this scene directly mirrored the one he let out when he learned of his own father’s death.

There’s this scene where he loses his friends, and he screams… The only thing I could hold onto was the scream I let out when I learned my father had passed away.

A painful memory that lent his performance an arresting sincerity, evident even in the final version of the film.

In the studio, there was something profoundly true in what I produced, and I think that’s why in the film, at that moment, you think: ‘Oh my gosh.’
