Astérix and Obélix’s New Netflix Hit: Can You Spot the Actor Behind Pirate Redbeard?

Redbeard, the bumbling pirate from the Astérix and Obélix comics, is featured in “The Middle Kingdom”. However, did you spot the actor hidden under that thick beard?

Released in theaters on February 1, 2023, Astérix and Obélix: The Middle Kingdom has already drawn over 4 million viewers and is currently ranked number 2 on Netflix’s top movies list.

Directed by Guillaume Canet, this latest installment in the adventures of our beloved Gauls features a host of guest stars, from Zlatan and Angèle to McFly and Carlito, Big Flo and Oli, and Orelsan.

Did You Recognize Him?

Among these stars, a well-known actor is virtually unrecognizable as he steps into the shoes of the iconic comic book character, Redbeard! Hidden behind a lush beard, makeup, a helmet, and an eye-patch, this actor and director is known for directing Pattaya, Les Kaïra, and Taxi 5… it’s Franck Gastambide! He follows in the footsteps of Gérard Jugnot, who played the pirate chief in the previous episode, On Her Majesty’s Service, and Bernard Farcy, who portrayed him in Mission Cleopatra.

The Gauls in China!

As a reminder, The Middle Kingdom takes us back to 50 BC. The Empress of China is imprisoned following a coup led by Deng Tsin Quin, a treacherous prince.

Assisted by Graindemaïs, the Phoenician merchant, and her loyal warrior Tat Han, Princess Fu Yi, the empress’s only daughter, flees to Gaul to seek help from the mighty warriors Astérix and Obélix, who possess superhuman strength thanks to their magic potion.

Our fearless Gaul duo agrees to help the Princess save her mother and free her country. Thus, they embark on a grand adventure to China. Meanwhile, Caesar and his powerful army, ever eager for conquest, also set their sights on The Middle Kingdom.
