During its “Geeked Week” event, Netflix made several announcements about its upcoming movies and series, including updates on season 2 of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” which is currently in production.
In early 2024, subscribers will dive back into the enchanting world of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and reconnect with the whimsical Aang. Following a first season that garnered positive reviews, Netflix is now developing seasons 2 and 3, in which our Air Nomad will learn new skills to battle the menacing Fire Nation, poised to set the world ablaze.
To succeed, Aang must enhance his mastery of water alongside Katara, while also learning Earthbending techniques from a new character introduced in season 2, beloved by Avatar fans: Toph.
This blind young girl became an Earthbending master by honing her senses and feeling the vibrations of the earth. Known as the “Blind Bandit” for her spirited nature, she decides to join Aang and his friends as a teacher and ally.
Casting Call to Discover the Perfect Fit
During Geeked Week, Netflix announced that Miya Cech, known for her roles in “Rim of the World” and “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” on Netflix, will portray Toph on the small screen:
Netflix describes this character as “cheeky, confident, and unfiltered. For most of her life, her strength and formidable earthbending skills were suppressed, but now, as the Avatar’s earthbending master on the run, she is free to become the fierce warrior she believes herself to be.”
Last June, Netflix issued a casting call for the role of Toph, encouraging individuals of Asian descent, those who are blind, or those with visual impairments to audition. Although Miya Cech is neither blind nor visually impaired, the 17-year-old actress of Japanese descent impressed Netflix with her sense of humor.
She will now undergo specialized physical training to perform the combat scenes in season 2 of “Avatar…”
