The new documentary series “Mr. McMahon” produced by Netflix is facing allegations of deceptive portrayal by the former WWE boss.
Eagerly anticipated by wrestling fans, the new Netflix documentary titled “Mr. McMahon” was released on the platform this Wednesday, September 25. The six-part series delves into the career of former WWE boss Vincent McMahon, also exploring the scandals that have marred his reputation, including sexual assault allegations that led to his departure from the company in 2022.
Several sports entertainment figures agreed to appear in the documentary, including wrestling legends like Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. Vincent McMahon was also interviewed by Netflix, providing on-camera commentary about his own journey.
Vincent McMahon Strikes Back
In an official statement, the 79-year-old businessman claims he “does not regret” participating in the Netflix project. However, he has accused the platform of using footage out of context “to skew viewer perception and support a misleading narrative.”
He argues that the documentary portrays the character he played in the wrestling ring – a tyrannical, demonic, and cruel billionaire – rather than the person he is in private life.
“Many things were distorted or completely omitted with the intent to confuse viewers,” he laments in the statement released on his social media.
He Attempted to Block the Documentary’s Release
However, numerous accounts from close associates severely criticize Vincent McMahon in the documentary. The lawyer for Janet Grant, the former employee accusing him of physical and emotional abuse, responded to his statement, asserting that her client “will no longer be silenced by McMahon.”
According to several insiders, Vincent McMahon had tried – unsuccessfully – to buy the rights to the series from Netflix in an effort to prevent its release. It is important to note that the documentary’s release comes just weeks before the WWE catalog is set to debut on the platform as part of a partnership signed after the businessman’s resignation.
All six episodes of the “Mr. McMahon” documentary are now available exclusively on Netflix.
