Tough news for “Sandman” fans as the dreaded announcement is confirmed. Here’s what you need to know.
It had been suspected for some time and now it’s official. Sandman, Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel, will conclude with its second season, expected to hit the platform later this year.
Firstly, it’s worth noting that this second season has been a long time coming. The first season premiered on the streaming service in August 2022 and wasn’t renewed until November of the same year. Even then, the number of episodes was not specified.
“The Sandman series has always focused exclusively on the story of Dream/Morpheus, and in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material in the comics, we knew we only had enough content for one more season,” said Allan Heinberg, the showrunner, in a statement released on X (formerly Twitter).
“We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the whole team together and giving us the time and resources needed to create a faithful adaptation that, we hope, will surprise and delight both the longtime readers of the comics and fans of our series.”
An Early Cancellation?
The release plan for season 2 will not be affected by this cancellation, and the new episodes will indeed be available in 2025.
Despite Allan Heinberg’s statement, the confirmation of the series ending comes as no surprise, primarily due to several accusations of sexual assault against Neil Gaiman, the creator of the DC comics, The Sandman, who also participated in the development of the Netflix series.
However, the first allegations against Gaiman emerged in a podcast by Tortoise Media in July 2024. Sources close to the production of Sandman had already informed Variety that the high production costs of the series would inevitably lead to its cancellation after season 2.
Another hint towards this premature ending: the casting announcement in May 2024 for season 2 revealed that the series’ plot was clearly headed towards the end of the comics much sooner than fans had anticipated.
What Will Season 2 Entail?
Netflix has not responded to requests for comments on the allegations against Neil Gaiman from Variety.
We do know, however, that the second season follows the story of “The Season of Mists” from the comics, in which Lucifer (played by Gwendoline Christie) relinquishes control of Hell and presents Morpheus/Dream (Tom Sturridge) with the key to its gates, prompting numerous immortals to try convincing Morpheus to give them the key.
On Netflix’s Tudum site, Heinberg reveals that audiences will meet new characters from the comics, including Thor, Loki, and Odin, in a banquet scene with “divine representatives” from various universes. “It’s a breathtaking spectacle wherever you look,” says Heinberg.
The new season also ventures further into time and space. “We’ll visit the underworld of Hades and Persephone, the courtly realm of Faerie, ancient Greece, Elizabethan England, and the French Revolution,” Heinberg explains. “We’ll meet demons, fairies, gods, and demiurges from all realms… and that’s just in the first few episodes.”
