Currently the top series on Netflix, “Soleil noir” is a riveting new thriller that joins the ranks of successful suspenseful miniseries on the platform. Not suitable for viewers under 16, this miniseries is a modern twist on the beloved summer sagas, blending family drama, unveiled secrets, dangerous investigations, and mysterious deaths.
Created and penned by Nils-Antoine Sambuc (En Thérapie, La Maison, Belphegor), “Soleil noir” tells the tale of a young mother escaping a troubled past, who finds herself accused of her new boss’s murder on a floral estate, only to discover he was actually her father.
The six-episode series features a cast including Ava Baya (Une amie dévouée), Guillaume Gouix (Les Revenants), Louise Coldefy (Family Business), Thibault de Montalembert (Dix pour cent), Claire Romain (Cat’s Eyes), Nicolas Vaude (La Fièvre), Simon Ehrlacher (Escort Boys), and the iconic Isabelle Adjani.
Where was “Soleil noir” filmed?
Echoing the popular summer sagas that have graced television networks, “Soleil noir” showcases the stunning French scenery of the region where it was filmed.
Like many summer sagas set in the south of France, “Soleil noir” takes place near Grasse, in a flower cultivation setting. “It was a nod to the summer saga,” explains Nils-Antoine Sambuc, “The idea of a distinct and beautiful territory came to me quickly, centered around the theme of perfume and the cultivation of extremely rare and precious flowers.”
Thus, Provence was the ideal location for “Soleil noir,” filmed all around the region including Nice, Cannes, and the surrounding hills. “However, we did cheat a bit with the rose field,” admits the creator and screenwriter, “These places are absolutely gorgeous, but in fact, 70 years ago, they were common throughout the region, which has since been significantly developed and urbanized.”
Sambuc also aimed to honor those who grow perfume flowers. Starting points included the fields, a grand residence, and a campsite where the seasonal workers, including the heroine Alba, live. “During prep, we found this incredible house, a kind of huge manor with surrounding land, about 40 minutes from Cannes,” explains the creator and screenwriter, “This house, which had many previous owners, was unoccupied but not at all dilapidated. So, we were able to also use it as a sort of mini-studio and utilize parts of the land for the camping and bungalows.”
“Soleil noir” is available for streaming on Netflix.
