Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth’s Criticism of Pete Hegseth
“How many times does Pete Hegseth need to leak classified intelligence before Donald Trump and Republicans realize that he’s not just a liar but a national security risk?” Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth posed this question.
Under a cloud of controversy, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing increasing pressure to step down after a report by The New York Times surfaced, detailing his involvement in sharing confidential U.S. military operations in Yemen within a private group chat. This chat included family members and his personal lawyer.
According to the report by The Times, which cited four anonymous sources familiar with the matter, Hegseth disclosed the timing details of U.S. F/A-18 Hornet strikes against Houthi forces in Yemen in a Signal chat group. Notably, this was the same military information he inadvertently shared in another chat group that incorrectly included a journalist from The Atlantic.
The confidential chat group initiated by Hegseth included his wife, a former producer at Fox News who is not affiliated with the Defense Department, and his brother, a Pentagon employee.
Reacting swiftly, congressional Democrats called for Hegseth’s immediate resignation, while the Pentagon issued a statement attempting to discredit the Times report by suggesting it was influenced by recently dismissed individuals seeking to undermine the Secretary and the President’s agenda.
Senator Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq War veteran and a critic of Hegseth, expressed on Sunday night that “every day he remains in his position, he puts our military personnel at risk due to his profound incompetence.”
Duckworth forcefully argued, “He must resign in disgrace.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts also highlighted the incident as another serious security lapse endangering American soldiers and national security.
“Pete Hegseth is unfit to hold the position of Defense Secretary,” Warren stated. “Donald Trump needs to dismiss him.”
“Pete Hegseth is unfit to hold the position of Defense Secretary. Donald Trump needs to dismiss him.”
Despite the backlash, the White House continues to support Hegseth. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt asserted on a Monday episode of “Fox & Friends” that Hegseth “is performing excellently in his role leading the Pentagon.”
This supportive stance from the White House contrasts sharply with a recent op-ed in Politico by John Ullyot, a former senior Pentagon spokesperson who resigned last week. Ullyot described the ongoing situation as a severe breakdown at the Pentagon, posing significant challenges for the administration.
Ullyot detailed the recent firing of three of Hegseth’s top aides—senior adviser Dan Caldwell, deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick, and Colin Carroll, chief of staff to the deputy secretary of Defense. Following their dismissal, there were attempts by Pentagon officials under Hegseth to anonymously tarnish these aides’ reputations.
Contrary to Pentagon claims of an ongoing investigation that would include lie detector tests, none of the dismissed staff members have been subjected to such tests, with at least one being told he was about to be cleared of any misconduct.
Hegseth was overwhelmingly confirmed as the Defense Secretary by the U.S. Senate in January, with robust support from the Republican Party. Currently, he and the president are advocating for a nearly one trillion dollar Pentagon budget for the next fiscal year, despite previous commitments to cut down on wasteful spending—a longstanding issue at the Defense Department, which has yet to pass an independent audit.
